Muslims intellectuals want the role of the Mufti removed from day-to-day management of Muslim affairs to strictly spiritual functions, it has emerged.
Currently Mufti Ramadhan Mubajje, who is embroiled in a property wrangle that has left the Muslim community divided into two factions, is not only the spiritual leader of the Muslim community in Uganda but also in charge of the management committee.
That arrangement, the Muslim intellectuals say, should be dropped because it compromises the role of the Mufti as the spiritual leader.
Presenting a paper, “Exploring Prospects of Muslim Unity in Uganda,” in Kibuli, Kampala on Sunday, Prof. Badru Katerega, the Vice Chancellor, Kampala University, said the constitution of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council must be reviewed to save the Mufti from any humiliation of being arraigned in courts of law to answer charges relating to mismanagement and theft.

US proxy warriors in Africa have been referred to as Bush’s Africa Rifles, now Obama’s Africa Rifles, not too different from the colonial proxy war tradition of the King’s Africa Rifles.
