Glenn Greenwald on David Brooks “self-loving tribalistic blindness laced with a pathological refusal to accept responsibility for one’s actions”
“if you constantly cheer on one war after the next that results in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent human beings and the extreme suffering of millions more (as Brooks has done — beyond Iraq and Afghanistan — and continues to do), then you can’t coherently claim that the targets of your wars have a unique disregard for human life; that they — but not you — “don’t see others as fully human”; that they — but not you — “cause incredible amounts of suffering”; and that they — but not you — “come to believe others can be blamelessly murdered and that, in fact, it is admirable to do so.”
Brooks advocates exactly that which he condemns — and he does so over and over again. That doesn’t mean his condemnations are wrong (criminals can coherently condemn other crimes). But it does mean that his claim that such sentiments are unique to Muslim radicals is plainly false.
If Mr. Greenwald does not win the Brass Crescent for Best non-Muslim blog then there is no justice in this world.

Due to the frequency of street violence against those identified as South Asians and Muslims in Italy, we need to create a new tag here at Talk Islam to categorize them since there are so many attacks. I haven’t been blogging them all, but I think it’s time to start. Any suggestions on a good short tag that describes the problem and/or might resemble the Google search of anyone trying to do research or reporting?
Anyway, here’s the latest:
Italy: Bangladeshi immigrant severely beaten on the outskirts of Rome, 30 arrested.
The attackers were reportedly aged between 15 and 20 years of age. They were at a cafe across the street from the park when they spotted the migrants.
A witness quoted by the Italian daily Il Messaggero heard them say “We must make these niggers disappear. We can’t allow these niggers to roam around Acilia any longer.”
At that point the young men approached four Bangladeshi migrants who were sitting at a park bench.
“You are a bunch of dirty people, we do not want you here in Acilia, you must all leave,” one of the young men reportedly shouted. “You dirty niggers we will show you that you have to do what we say,” said another one.
Three of the immigrants reportedly ran away after being kicked and punched. One of the Bangladeshi migrants, Mohammed P. however, did not escape and was brutally beaten by the youths who surrounded him while shouting “Leave here you dirty nigger.”
A witness called the police and the victim was quickly taken to hospital where doctors treated him for head trauma and a nose fracture.

Salman Rushdie signs on to petition supporting Roman Polanski.
I wrote some snarky commentary about this, but the hypocrisy is so vast and rich all on its own that I am hard pressed to improve upon it.

I find myself really irritated by the hypocrisy surrounding film director Roman Polanski’s extradition. Practically every day we’re bombarded by jafi arguments that the Prophet was a pedophile for marrying Aisha, yet when Polanski drugs and rapes a 13-year-old, he is a misunderstood genius. Gosh, I feel uncultured. Clearly there is some higher artistic logic at work here that my tiny mind cannot comprehend.
Check out this gem of a defense by one of Polanski’s industry colleagues:
Actor Peter Fonda said he thought “celebrating the arrest of Osama bin Laden and not the arrest of Polanski” was far more important.
I think we should make an Osama rule to go along with the Hitler rule: if you have to bring him up in comparison during an argument, your argument probably sucks.

A picture taken at a recent party at the US embassy in Afghanistan (follow link to the Huffington Post).
In at least one case, supervisors brought prostitutes into the quarters where the guards live, a serious breach of security and discipline, the group said this week. In other instances, members of the guard force drew Afghans into activities forbidden by Muslims, such as drinking alcoholic beverages, it said.

A new law gives an official stamp of approval to vigilante groups that have sprung up in several Italian cities, especially in the northern strongholds of the right wing, anti-immigrant Northern League.
The vigilantes can alert police to public order offences or suspected criminals but don’t have the power of arrest.
One group, known as the Italian National Guard, claims to have 2,000 members. It plans to dress its members in khaki shirts, black ties and black armbands bearing a red symbol that critics say resembles a swastika.

A proposal by rightwing groups to ban new minarets in Switzerland has been overwhelmingly dismissed in parliament.
In Belgium, Vlaams Belang (a Belgian ethnic-nationalist party) held a protest yesterday against the proposed mosque at the Sint-Bernardsesteenweg in Antwerp.
And in Oldham, a ‘giant’ mosque has been given the go ahead. What’s so giant about it?

News from morally superior and culturally sophisticated Europe:
Geert Wilders and his far-Right anti-Islamic immigrant party shot to second place behind the ruling Christian Democrats by taking 17 per cent of the vote in the Netherlands.
In Austria too, two anti-immigrant far-Right parties took an unprecedented 17.7 per cent of the vote.
The far-Right Danish People’s Party won two seats and took 14.4 per cent of Denmark’s vote.
In Slovakia a low turnout of just 19.4 per cent propelled an anti-gipsy extremist ultra-nationalist into the parliament and Hungary’s far-Right Jobbik took three seats for the first time.

It’s not ok to criticise Christianity in Germany if you’re Muslim:
The state of Hesse had planned to hand its 45,000-euro (61,000-dollar) prize this July jointly to a Jew, a Muslim, a Catholic and a Lutheran to honour the cultural achievements of the monotheistic religions.
But Catholic Cardinal Karl Lehmann of Mainz and Peter Steinacker, former head of the Lutheran church of Hesse and Nassau, objected to sharing the state culture prize with Navid Kermani, an Iranian-born author.
Kermani had begun an article about a crucifix, a standard Christian image that depicts Jesus Christ in an agonizing death nailed to a wooden cross, with, ‘I’d express my personal rejection of the theology of the cross frankly with ‘blasphemy and idolatry’.’

Superior Sophisticated Civilisation Watch: Spain will modify a law which allows Spanish judges the authority to investigate war crimes, after a group provided evidence that Israeli officials had committed crimes against humanity in a 2002 bombing which killed 15 people when only one man was the intended target.
I am not that surprised by Spain’s decision to modify the law. No doubt, when first passed by the Spanish parliament, it was probably never intended to be used against ‘one of our own’ and only against the swarthy races.
