Rush Limbaugh in trouble over anti-Semitic comments. Limbaugh said:

To some people, “banker” is code word for Jewish; and guess who Obama is assaulting? He’s assaulting bankers. He’s assaulting money people. And a lot of those people on Wall Street are Jewish. So I wonder if there’s starting to be some buyer’s remorse there?

Abe Foxman of the ADL responded:

Limbaugh’s references to Jews and money in a discussion of Massachusetts politics were offensive and inappropriate. While the age-old stereotype about Jews and money has a long and sordid history, it also remains one of the main pillars of anti-Semitism and is widely accepted by many Americans. His notion that Jews vote based on their religion, rather than on their interests as Americans, plays into the hands of anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists.

A recent poll found that the strongest predictor of prejudice against Muslims is whether a person holds similar feelings about Jews.

Somebody else on the good news in the decading just ending for Muslims:

Today, the diversity of Muslim voices in the public domain make it much more difficult than it was 10 years ago for any one Muslim group to get away with speaking on behalf all Muslims. It is also more difficult for elements in the media to make gross generalisations, as so many more Muslims are now themselves part of the print and broadcast media. The same is increasingly true of the political and business worlds.

A Forbes magazine article recently noted disparagingly that Turkey, “the poster-child for an Islam at peace with the 21st century, is 99.8% Muslim” inferring that Turkey is also the poster child for Islamic societies failing to live at ease with social complexity and diversity.

Unfortunately, a new study of prejudice in Turkey completed by Frekans Research has contributed nothing that would refute that comment.

When asked who they would not like as a next-door neighbor, 57 percent said an atheist family, followed by a Jewish family at 42 percent, a Christian family at 35 percent and 18 percent for a family from overseas. Thirteen percent said they would not like to live next door to an Alevi family.
    ….

The participants’ perceptions were largely based on nothing but prejudice because most had no contact with members of these minorities in their lives, according to the study.

One blogger said this survey was evidence against allowing Turkey to join the European Union:

The figures reveal that Turkey which seeks entry into the European Union has yet to grapple with the prejudices in their own homeland which might lead to trouble if immigrants could freely enter their land as members of EU nations.

Recent incident of teenage hijabi bullying in Florida provides disturbing view into the mind of the bully, who is about to join the US Army and go to Iraq.

After the incident, Lawrence was asked by a school staffer why she confronted the girl. “She began to rant that she was enlisting and was going to Iraq and that basically because the girl looks Middle Eastern, that makes her an enemy because all Iraqis are Middle Eastern,” according to the referral signed by assistant principal Stephen Crognale.

When journalists later asked her about these comments, she denied them.

The girl’s father doesn’t seem to be helping her sort out her confusion, instead copping a ‘we are the victims here’ attitude:

“You have someone in the States who is able to enjoy our educational and health care systems, yet it’s okay for them to be disrespectful, and it’s not okay for my daughter to speak her mind,” said Mark Lawrence, Heather’s father. “That’s her First Amendment right. That’s her freedom of speech.”

Funny, US conservatives were once ideologically known for their incessant whining about liberal ‘victimhood mentality,’ yet they seem to be on a hair-trigger to step into the role.

Media frenzy breaking our over Bollywood star Emraan Hashmi’s housing woes.

See new stories this morning from here, here and here.

    From the last:

Mr Hashmi said: “It is strange that they don’t tell you to your face that you can’t get a house because you are a Muslim. It would have been easier if they would have told me openly.

“What they told me is that they can’t allow me to live there because I am a serial kisser and my presence will have a bad influence on the children staying there.”

Mr Hashmi said someone had suggested to him that he purchase the house in the name of his wife, Parveen, who is a Hindu. “I can do that, but why should I?” he asked.

The Maharashtra government yesterday said it would investigate the issue.

“Action would be taken against those found guilty,” said Naseem Khan, the minister of state for home affairs.

Muslim Bollywood star Emraan Hashmi says he is being denied housing in Mumbai because of anti-Muslim prejudice.

Hashmi (“the heartthrob of Pakistan”), who was looking forward to buying a new flat, told reporters that he has filed a complaint against the housing society with the Maharashtra Minority Commission.

“My parents went to meet society members last week to get a no objection certificate (NoC) along with the seller and the broker, but the society members, however, told them that they were busy and refused to meet them,” claimed Hashmi.

Here’s a clip of Hashmi in action.

in the comments below aziz makes reference to slc24a5, a gene where its variation is responsible for 30-40% of the between group variance in complexion when the groups are africans and europeans. that is, without differences in skin color there might be less prejudice.

unfortunately, i think this is wrong. on the specific aspect of phenotype, chinese exhibited contempt toward light-skinned europeans due to their “big noses” and “hairiness.” in other words, skin color is a nice shorthand because it is very salient, skin is our biggest organ. but it is not the only feature. from what i can tell among south asians there is admiration (on average) for “sharp” features, which basically seems to mean more europoid ones (i get this impression only from talking to brown people in my 20s, as a younger person i didn’t know such a term existed because the only brown people i knew was my family).

When Citadel Broadcasting bought ABC News for $2.7 billion in 2006, there was some hope that the Islamophobes like Brian Sussman who lurk on some of the smaller outlets in ABC’s stable of radio stations would exercise restraint because the new CEO was Farid Suleman. Many assume that Suleman is Muslim, but Suleman has never spoken of his religion. His place of birth is uncertain too, with some reports citing Egypt, and some Tanzania.

Unfortunately, whatever makes up the content of Suleman’s life experiences and identity, it seems the steady anti-Arab and anti-Muslim beat has gone on, and on, and on…

god, most of the time accusations of racism, anti-semitism & islamophobia are just so moronic. erick erickson of red state says about an argument on journolist:

It makes for an interesting conversation. Apparently, many of the lefties don’t much care for Olbermann either. And they hate Marty Peretz, considering him a racist, which we all know is code for “Jewish” among this group of typically America haters who, many of them at least, tend to not exactly like Jews when they are being candid.

erick erickson is either not intelligent or totally disrespectful of truth. several of the people attacking marty peretz are jewish, and the moderator of journolist, ezra klein, is jewish by background. that being said, this isn’t a political thing, ezra klein should probably have been more careful when characterizing anti-semitic attacks which were directed at him on ann althouse’s blog as being of commenters, and not the blog-mistress herself.

there is a lot of hatred in this world. in the game of politics it seems that just becomes another pawn.

p.s. yes, some atheists in the united states also try to play the game, following in the heels of christian conservatives terming themselves “people of faith.”
