Lipkhan Bazaeva, who runs a nongovernmental organization promoting women’s rights, says Chechnya is going back to the Middle Ages.
“Yes, we are a traditional, conservative society, with our own values, but the government has gone overboard, declaring unacceptable limits on women — that they should sit at home, they should obey their husbands,” she says. “As an individual, she has no rights even if her husband beats her, despite Russian laws to the contrary.”

some comment about muslims & sharia in the thread. i don’t know if i think gay marriage has anything really to do with polygamy & muslims in the USA (the author makes that point in a follow up post). i mean, how many weirdo muslims like they have in europe do they have here anyway? my understanding is that most american polygamists are mormon or west african.

Frankly I’m not sure how you can treat both wives equally if the second marriage is not legal, and the second wife doesn’t have the advantages that come with a legally recognized marriage. Of course the state could just get out of the business of marriage, but until that happens, how can you treat them both with “equal fairness” as required in 4:3? (I also wonder why the reference to orphans gets left out in current discussions of that verse).
