Algihadya, an Egyptian Jihadi blogger, has posted an essay by Zadi al-Taqwa titled “Al-Qaeda and the Battle for Oil.” [Zadi al-Taqwa] argues that AQ has focused on attacking U.S. oil interests since its inception in 1998 because it understands that oil is vital to the U.S. economy, which it wants to damage. This is one of the main reasons it went into Iraq, where it could thwart U.S. plains to obtain cheap oil and where it could damage the oil infrastructure of a major oil producer. There is no mention of religious justifications or Prophetic precedents for attacking oil; it’s purely economic in Zadi’s analysis.

it seems to me that those in the u.s. who wish to secure energy independence from the middle east have put little thought into what the world is going to look like when the great oil producing countries are no longer receiving revenues from that source. when the wells finally run dry, the collapse of several national economies cannot possibly be a pretty picture, it seems to me.

saudi arabia, et al., should squeeze every dollar and euro out of their wells that they possibly can while they can because they could be looking at a very bleak economic future.

Last week, Gordon Brown called on the EU and G8 to break Opec as the House of Representatives passed a bill which would allow the oil cartel to be subjected to US antitrust laws.

The White House, unsurprisingly, opposed the bill.
