Imaan – the organisation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Muslim people in Britain – has said it is proud to have worked with the BBC’s Eastenders to develop its newest character, a gay Muslim, in the award-winning soap. When I chatted to an Imaan spokesperson back in 2004, I was warmed and inspired by their inclusive, empathic attitude – acknowledging and supporting those LGB Muslims who felt being gay was at odds with being Muslim, as well as those gay Muslims who felt their faith and sexuality were reconcilable.
