US senator Tom Coburn from Oklahoma has joined with a small group of Congressional reps. in their campaign against CAIR that has been referred to as the ‘Muslim spies’ debacle.

The effort is inspired by the book Muslim Mafia by David Gaubatz, which asserts among other things that CAIR attempted to place ‘Manchurian interns‘ representing some mythical Muslim political hive-mind close to policy makers in the US Capitol.

CAIR, of course, is actually an American advocacy organization comprised of American citizens who have every right to attempt to influence policy makers in pursuit of the group’s mission, which is to aggressively protect the civil rights of Muslim American citizens and non-citizen residents in the United States.

Coburn is a social conservative who is often defined as an “ultra-conservative” Republican. He is most remembered for asserting during his campaign for the Senate that a swath of the state of Oklahoma had – under the noses of the regular folk of that state – turned into a “lesbian Sodom and Gomorrah” for teens, where schoolgirls could only be allowed to go to the bathroom one at a time for fear of them falling upon each other.

For those of you unfamiliar with this part of the US, it is a very conservative place – so conservative in fact that residents elected him over the Democratic candidate despite the lunatic charge he made against their children.

‘Muslim Mafia’ author planning new Monty Python-esque project to surveil North Carolina Muslims.

Muslim Mafia scribe Dave Gaubatz is planning an investigative counterterrorism project in the Sunni mosques of North Carolina, and one lucky donor to the project will be invited to join his crack team of researchers. Needed for the job, according to an “urgent” post on Gaubatz’s blog: $25,000, two motorcycles, and use of one class A RV for 30 days.

The project starts Dec. 5 and the “highest donor can travel on team” and “will work alongside Dave Gaubatz the entire 30 days,” according to the cached version of the blog post.

Here is the cached version of Gaubatz’s blog post:

Funds needed for NC CT Research
Urgent need for research money to conduct first-hand research throughout NC. Primarily Sunni mosques. Team requires $25,000 total and use of a class A RV for a period of 30 daysa.

Anyone interested in funding for this project will be designated a team member and will work alongside Dave Gaubatz the entire 30 days.

This project will accept three interns and two fully trained researchers.

Funders, Researchers, Interns, and highest donor can travel on team.

All funds will be accounted for and results will be providied to all subcribers.

Pay for Interns: $1,000 plus meals.
Pay for Researchers: $3000.00 plus meals

    1 Class A travel bus
    2 motorcycles

The motorcycles are for use (following Muslims?) in congested cities, Gaubatz told TPM.

Muslim Mafia author’s call for backlash against Muslims embarrasses even right-wing think tank.

This just goes to prove what I’ve suspected all along, that Muslim bashers use the phrase ‘Muslim Brotherhood’ as a proxy epithet to refer to all Muslims.

…the right-wing think tank that published conservative author Dave Gaubatz’s call for a backlash against the “Muslim community” has now scrubbed the line and replaced it with a call for a backlash against the “Muslim Brotherhood.”

Here is the line as it was:

Politicians, Muslims, and law enforcement are concerned about a ‘backlash’ against Muslims. Now is the time for a professional and legal backlash against the Muslim community and their leaders. Muslims know what materials are being taught in their mosques and they know many of the materials instruct young Muslims to kill innocent people who do not adhere to Sharia law.

    And as it appears now:

Politicians, Muslims, and law enforcement are concerned about a ‘backlash’ against Muslims. Now is the time for a professional and legal backlash against the Muslim Brotherhood and their leaders. Muslims know what materials are being taught in their mosques and they know many of the materials instruct young Muslims to kill innocent people who do not adhere to Sharia law.

As TPM observes, “Even on its own terms, the new passage doesn’t make a ton of sense, shifting from Muslims to Muslim Brotherhood and back to Muslims.”

Muslim Mafia author ordered to remove CAIR documents from Web.

A federal judge has taken the rare step of ordering self-described anti-terrorism investigator Paul David Gaubatz to remove from his Web site some of the 12,000 documents that his son allegedly stole from the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly also ordered Gaubatz to return documents used in his book, “Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That’s Seeking to Islamize America,” which was co-authored by Paul Sperry and portrays the council as a subversive organization that’s allied with international terrorists.
    ….

“The record … supports a finding that defendants have unlawfully obtained access to, and have already caused repeated public disclosure of, material containing CAIR’s proprietary, confidential and privileged information,” Kollar-Kotelly concluded last week.

Now that the ‘Muslim spies’ campaign has imploded and its progenitors are running away with their tales between their legs, CAIR’s Ibrahim Hooper had some fun chasing after them on CNN.

Also, I love the title for the segment: ‘Manchurian interns.’

87-member congressional minority caucus: Muslim ‘intern spy’ hunt smacks of McCarthy era.

    Full statement:

Four of our colleagues, Reps. John Shadegg (AZ), Paul Broun (GA), Trent Franks (AZ) and Sue Myrick (NC) recently requested that the House Sergeant at Arms to launch an investigation of the civil rights group CAIR, or Council on American-Islamic Relations, to determine whether it was placing staff and interns in key Congressional offices who they fear are acting as “spies.”
This proposed investigation coincides with the launch of a book by Dave Gaubatz, an anti-Islamic activist and author of the book “Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld that’s Conspiring to Islamize America.” It features an introduction by Rep. Myrick, and was written after Gaubatz posed as an intern at CAIR in an effort to “infiltrate” the group.

These charges smack of an America of sixty years ago where lists of “un-American” agitators were identified. We should be affirming the importance of diversity and tolerance for all interns and staff who serve in Congress without suspicion of being identified as “spies.”

The idea that we should investigate Muslim interns as spies is a blow to the very principle of religious freedom that our founding fathers cherished so dearly. If anything, we should be encouraging all Americans to engage in the U.S. political process; to take part in, and to contribute to, the great democratic experiment that is America.

We all have experienced the sting of discrimination and we know that there will be challenges ahead. But our message should be firm that the America we believe in welcomes people of all backgrounds to the U.S. Congress.

We ask these charges be disavowed and we issue a hearty welcome to interns and staff of all creeds, color, ethnicities and sexual orientation.

GOP reps file request with sergeant at arms for Muslim ‘intern spy’ investigation.

After a week delay, four Republican lawmakers have formally asked the House sergeant at arms to investigate whether a Muslim advocacy group placed interns in national security committees, a spokesperson for the sergeant at arms confirmed to TPMmuckraker this afternoon.

The letter claims that CAIR is tied to “HAMAS” (all caps in original). See the letter sent here. TPM reports:

“They did what they said they were going to do,” CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper told TPMmuckraker, saying the group had no plans to reach out to the sergeant at arms. “I think the sergeant at arms will take it as seriously as other reasonable people do and file it under bizarre political stunts,” he said.

Muslim impersonator’s spy camera fell out the front of his shirt during CAIR staff meeting.

TPM is all over the ‘Muslim spies” fiasco again tonight in an interview with Chris Gaubatz, the son of one of the authors of “Muslim Mafia,” and the one who “went undercover,” impersonating a Muslim for six months among the nefarious CAIR interns.

Here, Gaubatz recounts how his cover was almost blown when his spy camera accidentally burst out the front of his shirt:

Q: Did you ever come close to having your cover blown?

A: Only once did I almost have my cover blown, which is documented in the introduction of Muslim Mafia. For the entire six months, I wore a button camera on my shirt, but at the beginning of my internship the button-cam popped off. I was sitting in the middle of about 30-40 other CAIR employees at a conference on how to deal strategically with the media. One of the other researchers happened to be with me and noticed the camera was gone. I acted like I was coughing, and slipped out to replace the camera.

Pretty fly for a white guy to have outfoxed our eagle-eyed CAIR operatives like that. Otherwise I’m sure his Muslim impersonation was flawless.

Gaubatz on the Muslims he met while working for CAIR:

“They were nice people and I got along with them very well which is why I was able to retrieve the information I did,” Gaubatz says. “But just because somebody is outwardly friendly doesn’t mean they can’t be doing something wrong or even harming National Security.”

Paraphrase: ‘They were very nice people and I took advantage of their niceness.’ What a total jerk…

CAIR files a criminal complaint against the ‘Muslim spies’ conspiracy book authors P. David Gaubatz and Paul Sperry.

CAIR has filed a criminal complaint against the authors of the book, alleging that the memo they are using to attack CAIR was stolen. Indeed, Sperry was interviewed by Radio America yesterday and admitted that the planted intern “collected whole boxes of evidence marked for shredding” and took documents that “he felt he needed to preserve as evidence [of illegal wrongdoing].”

According to DC law, the authors could be guilty of conspiracy to commit theft with a “bias-related crime” specification, meaning that they could face up to 15 years in prison if the stolen document is deemed to have a value of $250 or more, or only 270 days if it is deemed to have less value.

Heh. The jafisphere’s first ‘political prisoners.’

TPM has more on the author of the book that unleashed the Republican hysteria about “Muslim spies:”

That would be David Gaubatz, a former Air Force investigator and Arabic speaker, who dispatched his son Chris to grow a beard and go undercover as a Muslim to obtain an internship at the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Gaubatz, who has long warned about the threat of Islamism in the United States, has claimed that he found Saddam’s long-lost WMDs while in Iraq and has labeled Obama “Muslim” and a “self-admitted ‘crack head.’”

Here’s a neat check list of teh Crazy of Gaubatz compiled by TPM:

    • He referred to “our Muslim leader” Barack Obama on his blog last year.

    • He has claimed that he personally found sites with Iraqi weapons of mass destruction when he was an agent with the Air Force’s Office of Special Investigations in 2003. But the Syrians beat us to the punch on excavating the sites, Gaubatz claims, and the U.S. government suppressed the information to avoid the “explosive revelation of their own lethal incompetence.”

    • Just yesterday he wondered about Congress’ two Muslim representatives, “How much information do we have on Carson and Congressman Keith Ellison?”

According to Glenn Greenwald, Gaubatz in 2007 was focusing his time on creating “a comprehensive map of every mosque and Islamic school in the U.S” in order to determine which ones were preaching “Islamic law.” The Web site that explained that project has since been made private.

    • He said in September 2008 on a now scrubbed blog post at http://www.jihadishere.blogspot.com that: “We are now on the verge of allowing a self admitted ‘crack-head’ to have his finger on every nuclear weapon in America.”

    • He apparently has a history of faking conversions to Islam as part of his investigations.

TPM has been doing an excellent job of covering the response to the ‘Muslim spies’ accusation that four Republican reps. made yesterday, ie, that CAIR interns on Capitol Hill are actually “spies” who are somehow working against American interests in favor of a mythical Muslim collective. The four reps are Sue Myrick (R-N.C.), John Shadegg (R-Ariz.), Paul Broun (R-Ga.) and Trent Franks (R-Ariz.).

First there were the strong denunciations that came from congressional Democrats Loretta Sanchez, Andre Carson and John Conyers. Carson called it “”fearmongering at its worst.” Here’s Sanchez:

As a strong advocate for diversity and religious freedom, I find these claims to be outrageous and offensive. I urge the rest of my colleagues to join me in denouncing this witch hunt, which is clearly intended to create fear and distrust in our Capitol Hill community.

Andre Carson, it turns out, was “infiltrated” by a fake CAIR intern who was actually the son of the author of a World Net Daily publication that incited the four Republican reps. to make their “Muslim spies” charge. The author is P. David Gaubatz, and his son is Chris. Here is a picture of Chris in his Muslim persona with Rep. Carson:
