Reports of Iranian police disobeying orders, refuse to shoot protestors.
An Iranian opposition website said police forces were refusing orders to shoot at opposition protesters during clashes on Sunday in central Tehran, where it was reported earlier that at least four demonstrators had been killed.
“Police forces are refusing their commanders’ orders to shoot at demonstrators in central Tehran … some of them try to shoot into air when pressured by their commanders,” the Jaras website said.
Four protesters have been killed by police elsewhere though.
“Three of our compatriots were martyred and two were injured in clashes. The (website) reporter who was on the scene said these three were directly shot at by military forces,” Rahesabz.net reported.
Rahesabz said a fourth protester was later killed near Vali Asr intersection on Enghelab.
“The people are carrying the body of this martyr and are shouting slogans,” it said citing eyewitnesses.

‘Jihadi culture’ on the rise in Pakistan.
Pakistani writer and defence analyst Dr Ayesha Siddiqa writes: “Madrassas nurturing armies of young Islamic militants ready to embrace martyrdom have been on the rise for years in the Punjab. In fact, South Punjab has become the hub of jihadism. Yet, somehow, there are still many people in Pakistan who refuse to acknowledge this threat.”
Religious groups promoting jihad have very organised system of recruiting and training young people to advance the cause of Islam. Poverty stricken areas with economic deprivation are fertile ground to spread extremist views. Young children are recruited from madrassas and are looked after so well that their own living style looks much inferior.
….The Jihadi outfits which are still actively recruiting and training people are: Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Tayyaba (LeT).
Pakistan may not be a good place to send your kid for religious education right now.

Dutch remember filmmaker Theo van Gogh, murdered by a Muslim fanatic 5 years ago.
Takeaway quote: “Many Dutch say the Van Gogh murder helped the rise of Geert Wilders, an anti-immigrant politician whose party leads in recent polls.”
The killing also turned an ill-tempered, grouchy crank into a martyr.

This article does a good job of describing the atmosphere at Imam Luqman Abdullah’s funeral Saturday, which I was blessed to attend along with hundreds of others from all over the country.
Upset yet content with God’s will, Muslims called for justice Saturday at the funeral of an Islamic leader who was killed by FBI agents in a shootout last week.
More than 1,000 packed the Muslim Center in Detroit in a spillover crowd that was at times teary-eyed over the fatal shooting of Luqman Ameen Abdullah, a Muslim leader, or imam, who led another Detroit mosque. One speaker called him a martyr.
Muslims from metro Detroit, Virginia, New York, Philadelphia, and Atlanta attended the hour-long ceremony followed by a burial at Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton. At the burial, speakers urged the crowd not to seek revenge on the police or the informants they used in the case, saying that any punishment would come in the afterlife.

Juan Cole on the bomb blast at the Islamic University in Islamabad: ‘It was a patriarchal protest against women in higher education and an assertion of extreme puritanism.‘
Two suicide bombers attacked the campus of the Islamic International University in Islamabad on Tuesday (with one of them tageting the women students), killing 6 persons and wounding 37. The attacks had two contexts. They were meant as revenge for the Pakistani government campaign against the Taliban in Waziristan. But they also were patriarchal protests against higher education for women and assertions of extreme Puritanism.
The three women known to have been killed by the bombing strike are every bit martyrs to the cause of educated women standing up to authoritarian religious regimes as Neda Agha Soltan, who was killed in Tehran this summer.

Please read Moazzam Begg’s piece on the death of Muhammad Ahmad Abdallah Salih at Guantanamo.
Only three people have been released since Obama came into office – Muhammad is one of them.

Umar Lee calls for a “fleet of martyrs” to be put together from Western Muslims to try to come to the aid of Gaza.
The idea of American, Canadian, British and other Western Muslims setting up a fleet to go into Gaza at once is something I would like to see the major Muslim organizations take on. It is a win-win situation. If the fleet arrives those who made it possible will be rewarded for the good deeds and the people of Gaza will be helped and if the fleet is attacked then I pray that Allah will grant those on board martyrdom and this event will be used to create an international al outcry for the people of Gaza.
Check out his whole post on Gaza here.
