  Conflict of interest: New York Times Jerusalem bureau chief’s son may have enlisted in the Israeli army.

  The New York Times has all but confirmed to The Electronic Intifada (EI) that the son of its Jerusalem bureau chief Ethan Bronner was recently inducted into the Israeli army.

  Tikun Olam has more:

  Since the Times has no full correspondent in Gaza or the West Bank, Bronner is in effect the editor covering all those theaters. As such he MUST be able to report dispassionately from the Palestinian as well as Israeli perspective.

  Many of my readers have followed my ongoing critique of Bronner’s reporting, which shows decided, though perhaps not fully conscious bias towards Israel’s narrative. Given this, the possibility that his son serves in the army that maintains the Occupation and is the locus of injustice raises glaring questions of conflict of interest.

  The Christian Science Monitor, which ran a series last week on the hijab and is generally considered to be a neutral secular alternative source of news, has run an editorial about the upcoming trials of 11 men for their roles in mass casualty attacks on the US. The author says it will be a “moment of truth” for the Muslim world about Islamic theology.

  I’m uncertain how to respond to this editorial. I can’t determine if its intent is to reinforce anti-Muslim fearmongering, or if it is a genuine attempt to describe reality.

  If it had been written by someone like Daniel Piper or Robert Spencer then it would be fairly simple, but the author, Walter Rogers, doesn’t appear to be another neocon smearcasting flunkie. Rogers has been the object of hasbara attacks for his criticism of Israel, and advocates that the US should withdraw from Afghanistan.

  Rogers writes, “Political correctness aside, the jury is still out in the court of American public opinion” on whether Islam is a religion of peace.

  He says the trials will also raise the question of dual or divided loyalty, a question that has been raised about many American minorities.

  And then he cites the writings of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson about their dealings with the sultan of Tripoli to assert the perspective that Islam has a long history of belligerence.

  Walters concludes with this: “As with all faiths, virtue lies in the effect it has on its adherents. So it is not unfair to ask: “Which Islam is the religion of peace, and how do we tell the difference?” Only Muslims can answer that.”

  Agenda-driven fearmongering or attempt to describe reality…not sure.

  Saudi Arabia’s king moved swiftly to pardon a female reporter who had been sentenced to 60 lashes for working for a news outlet that produced a story about a Saudi man’s raunchy single sex life.

  The reporter, Rosanna al-Yami, said earlier that the verdict was intended to be “a punishment for all journalists through me.”

  Arbitrary shariah: Saudi judge orders female journalist to be flogged for being associated with Lebanese TV station.

  A court on Saturday sentenced a female Saudi journalist to receive 60 lashes for her links with a Saudi-owned Lebanese TV network which broadcast a provocative racy show in July.

  Rosanna al-Yami said a Jeddah judge dropped all charges that she had been directly involved with a program on Beirut-based network LBC in which a Saudi man boasted of his sex life, outraging Saudi conservatives and leading to the man’s imprisonment.

  However, Yami said the judge sentenced her to 60 lashes for having been a part-time employee for LBC’s Saudi operations. The judge said that LBC had lacked the appropriate operating license.

  “It’s a punishment for all journalists through me,” Yami told AFP by telephone.

  “They just said the channel was illegal. But the Saudi minister of information himself appeared on LBC a couple week ago,” she said.

  More pictures and profiles of journalists and bloggers that have been arrested in the post-election crackdown in Iran after the jump.

  Why pay attention to Muslim bloggers and journalists there that have been arrested? Because they asked for and appreciate the support from those of us here in the West…Here’s Omidreza Mirsayafi, an Iranian blogger who was arrested for his blogging activities and died in Evin prison in March writing to a western reporter:

  “When I see your post on the mentiond [sic] website, I became so happy that a journalist in other corner of world writes about the situations of Iranians journalist & bloggers and is concerned about us.”

  Please ignore fellow Westerners – Muslim or otherwise – who accuse you of exploitation, appropriation, practicing ‘Western gaze’ (“a voyeuristic glimpse into the post-revolutionary real”) or any other diversions and stay focused on the events unfolding there, and the people caught up in them, some of whom are taking great risks “to present an unaverted gaze on political unrest for the world outside Iran.”

  On ‘aggregators’:

  The Washington Post has fired columnist/blogger Dan Froomkin, setting up a wall of silence about why they did – which strongly implies the reason would not withstand scrutiny, but some info has leaked out:

  Some reporters and editors at The Post view Froomkin as a superb, hard-working “aggregator” whose blog needed more original reporting.

  Susie Madrak clarifies:

  Not aggregator. ‘Aggregator’ implies that a blogger collects news without discrimination. What we do is more properly described as a ‘news concierge’ – that is, we tell you which news organizations spit in the food, keep you waiting for a table and whose snooty waiters aren’t worth a tip.

  Emptywheel says the Wapo just couldn’t stand the media criticism that comes with “the aggregator’s” territory.

  I would never have guessed Yvonne Ridley is a fan of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

  My other interest [in the Iranian election] stems from the fact I’m quite a fan of Mahmoud Admadinejad [sic] who is adored by the common man and woman in Iran. Anyone who vows to narrow the gap between rich and poor can’t be all that bad… unless you’re one of the rich!

  Here’s Fox News ’strategic analyst’ Ralph Peters:

  The phenomenon of Western and world journalists championing the “rights” and causes of blood-drenched butchers who, given the opportunity, would torture and slaughter them, disproves the notion–were any additional proof required–that human beings are rational creatures.

  Two paragraphs later he writes:

  Pretending to be impartial, the self-segregating personalities drawn to media careers overwhelmingly take a side, and that side is rarely ours. Although it seems unthinkable now, future wars may require censorship, news blackouts and, ultimately, military attacks on the partisan media.

  Yes, what poor form it would be to take the side of a journalist killer.

  And if that’s not enough words of wisdom from a Fox News analyst for you, here’s Peters on the need for summary battlefield executions in Afghanistan and elsewhere, because terrorists “aren’t human any more, they’re monsters, and… monsters deserve to die.”
