  ‘Taking risks for peace’:

  A senior Israeli Cabinet minister says the Palestinians need to compromise over their demand that Israel extend a slowdown of West Bank settlement [colony] construction.

  Here’s an example of Israel compromising for the sake of peace:

  The sentencing phase in the trial of Abdallah Abu Rahmah, the coordinator of the Bil’in Popular Committee Against the Wall and Settlements, began yesterday at the Ofer Military Court. Abu Rahmah was convicted of organizing illegal marches and of incitement last month, but cleared of the violence charges he was indicted for – stone-throwing and a vindictive arms-possession charge for collecting used tear-gas projectiles and displaying them.

  The prosecution demanded Abu Rahmah will be sent to prison for a period exceeding two years, saying that as an organizer, a harsh sentence is required to serve as a deterrence not only for Abu Rahmah himself, but to others who may follow in his footsteps as well. This statement by the prosecution affirms the political motivation behind the indictment, and the concern raised by EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, that “the possible imprisonment of Mr Abu Rahma is intended to prevent him and other Palestinians from exercising their legitimate right to protest against the existence of the separation barriers in a non violent manner.”

  And another:

  The Israeli army has admitted that three Palestinian men it killed in Gaza on Sunday were civilians, and not terrorists, as previously claimed.

  Brig Gen Ayal Eisenberg said one of the men had picked up a grenade launcher abandoned in a field, and Israeli troops mistakenly opened fire, thinking they were about to come under attack.

  Among those killed were a 91-year-old farm worker and his grandson, aged 17.

  Amongst all the commentary about the Israeli-US flap over 1600 settlements in East Jerusalem, Roger Cohen’s in the NYT stands out.

  This is a watershed moment. Palestinian violence, Palestinian anti-Semitic incitement and jihadist infiltration of the Palestinian national movement all undermine peace efforts. They are unacceptable; Biden was right to “ironclad” the U.S. commitment to Israeli security. But it’s past time that Palestinian failings cease to serve as an excuse for Israel’s remorseless, cynical scattering of the Palestinian people into enclaves that make a farce of statehood. That is “an affront” to America.

  In this sense, Biden’s foray has been salutary. It brought U.S. “vital interests” to the surface. It challenged Israel’s ostrich-like burrowing into polices that, over time, will make one divided, undemocratic state more likely than “two states for two peoples.” It asked again the question posed recently by David Shulman of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem: Are Israelis, cocooned, still able “to see, to imagine, and to acknowledge the suffering of other human beings, including those aspects of their suffering for which we are directly responsible?”

  10,000 new settlers within 10 months: Israel.

  An Israeli minister has predicted there will be 10,000 new settlers in the occupied West Bank over the next 10 months and insisted that a moratorium did not freeze but only limited construction.

  The minister was saying this to try to placate extremist protesters who are engaging in civil disobedience (and worse) over the supposed freeze on settlement building that is currently in place. That didn’t stop settlers from going into a West Bank village and torching the local mosque.

  Palestinians in the West Bank village of Kufur Yasuf, near Nablus, said a gang of Jewish settlers forced their way into the local mosque on Thursday night, doused carpets and copies of the Quran with petrol, and set them ablaze.

  Graffiti scrawled in Hebrew at the threshold said it was “the price-tag” — an expression used by hardline settlers for systematic acts of vengeance against Palestinians.

  Al-Arabiya: ‘Israel wins as US drops call for settlement freeze.’

  Israel savored a victory on Sunday after U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton hailed his “unprecedented” position on settlements and back tracked from a previous call for a complete freeze to settlement construction before possible peace talks with the Palestinians.

  “There is no question that the United States are our staunchest friends and that Israel’s firm stance on its positions pays off,” Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon told public radio on Sunday in a satisfied tone echoed by other officials.

  The Israelis had reason to be satisfied.

  In a joint press conference held, unusually, before talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pressed for negotiations to be restarted as soon as possible, despite the Palestinian insistence — which Washington backed only a few months ago — that Israel must first put a stop to all settlement activity in the occupied West Bank.

  Sigh. Rewarding the Israelis for being obstinate and disagreeable will yield more of the same in the future. Sucks to be you Mrs. Clinton.

  MasterCard accused of backing ‘extreme settlers.’

  An Israeli peace organization has launched an international campaign against MasterCard to protest the eviction of Palestinians from a village in East Jerusalem.

  Gush Shalom, a left-wing Israeli activist group, is protesting the inclusion of a coupon from the right-wing Israeli group Elad in the monthly statements issued by the Israeli MasterCard company Isracard. Gush Shalom says the coupons, which offer discounted tours of the ancient City of David managed by Elad, are helping to promote the ‘Judaization’ of East Jerusalem.
