Update: It isn’t terrorism if you are a white guy with a plane or … pretty much anyone else who happens to be killing people in countries the US government doesn’t like.

Womb weapon in hand, Umar sez Brother Nidal Hasan had good intentions but made a bad choice.
If only we could find it in our hearts to extend such gentle, loving reprimands and murmurs of disapproval to our American government for its bad choices.

The Jesuit Refugee Service has released a report that it hopes will prompt Italy to reconsider its policy of deporting illegal migrants to Libya.
One migrant recalls the words guards used to deny help to one of his dehydrated friends: “Here the hospital is not for black people but only for Libyans. If you want, go back and die in your country.”
He says a boy, who suffered from asthma, died shortly after being told: “If you come here on your own, you die on your own.”
“Many of us had scabies. Some of my friends had swollen genitals. When the guards saw this they beat them hard with a stick, put them in solitary confinement and just left them there,” another migrant says.
….Living in Tripoli is described as a frightening prospect, living in fear of being robbed or beaten by the locals, even children.
“A little boy will come up to you and search for your money. If you refuse he will hit you, spit at you and report you to the police. You just put up your hands and allow him to check your pockets. You are nothing, he is Libyan.”
If only the migrants were attractive young women, Qaddafi might be making a conspicuous display of sparing no expense on their behalf.

A bad news morning in the media. Rather than crud up the front page with it, I’ll do a round-up post.
• A New York Times article focuses on the hypocrisy of outrage in the Muslim world about the Swiss mineret ban when most of those same countries are repressing their own religious minorities.
“The decision of the Swiss people stood to be interpreted as xenophobic, prejudiced, discriminative and against the universal human rights values,” said the Organization of the Islamic Conference in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which represents 57 Muslim-majority nations.
Members include Saudi Arabia, where non-Muslims are arrested for worshiping privately; Maldives, the Indian Ocean atoll where citizenship is reserved for Muslims; Libya, which limits churches to one per denomination in cities; and Iran, where conversion from Islam is punished by death, according to a 2009 U.S. State Department report on religious freedom.
• A conference on sexual harassment in the Arab world concluded in Cairo with a message that “the sexual harassment of women in the streets, schools and work places of the Arab world is driving them to cover up and confine themselves to their homes.”
• A federal judge sentenced a Pakistani-American and a Bangladeshi-American to long prison terms in Georgia on terrorism-related charges. The defendants were defiant in court and said the laws of the US don’t apply to them. They refused to stand at sentencing. “Mankind rises for God. We cannot stand before men.”
• Pakistani cricketers were mocked with racist comments and jeers at a New Zealand match. Spectators in a corporate box shouted “Pakistani terrorists!” at the team and made other comments.
• Another bomb blast in Pakistan has killed another slew of people.
• India claims the two Kashmiri women whose deaths prompted riots drowned in an ankle-deep stream. “The agency filed charges against 13 people, including 6 doctors, 5 local lawyers, an activist and the brother of one of the dead women. The charges included fabricating evidence and intimidating witnesses after the recovery of the two bodies.”

More on brother Mu-adh’s post on modern science and Islamic teachings: For further reading, he excerpts the writings of one Shaykh Abdal Qadir as-Sufi, that are frankly Jew-baiting and anti-Semitic, full of references to “Jewish control systems” and “Jewish subversion” – and therefore discredited to my mind. See Suhaib Webb writing about the people who take advantage of “the ignorance of some Muslims, and the media machines in order to promote that Islam is a hateful religion” for a fuller rebuttal to this kind of conduct. As Imam Webb points out, “the community of the prophet had KNOWN hypocrites,” and this one is no different (NOTE: Imam Webb is speaking about other people and other subjects. The specific criticism of Shaykh Abdal Qadir as-Sufi here is mine and mine alone.).
I went to visit the web page of Shaykh Abdal Qadir as-Sufi. In his most current post he smears the Palestinians in general and Hamas in particular (for turning Shia, which is contemptuous and dismissive of Shia Muslims in itself) and calls the Chinese “sub-human.” The plight of the Uighurs is a superior concern over the Palestinians in part because ‘they still use an Arabic script.’
In the world outside a terrible crisis has broken and one which must involve the whole world community of Muslims. I refer to the abomination of the murder of Uighur men, women, and children and the destruction of the markets, houses and mosques of the Uighur people. It is time – and I call on our Arab brothers especially – to forget Palestine, that dismal nationalist failure. Hamas have turned Sh’ia and the other group are mired in corruption. Their problem is nothing to the devastating planned annihilation of a great Muslim people, one which still uses an Arabic script.
The Chinese are at war with us and the least action we can perform is to sanction all trade connections with the communist atheist entity. No Muslim business, no Muslim person, no Muslim nation should have any commercial intercourse with the sub-human regime.
Shaykh Abdal Qadir as-Sufi goes on to issue a fatwa:
…goods marked “Made in China” I declare forbidden to all Muslims…
