The 99, a Sharia-compliant version of the X-Men, was actually created to counter ‘jihadist’ propaganda, claims this Indian newspaper.

The franchise, which was created as a cartoon strip three years ago to counter the effects of jihadist agitprop on Muslim minds, is poised to make its debut on British television this year.
    ….

The 99 has faced resistance in the Middle East, particularly in Saudi Arabia, where it was only passed by the country’s censors when it gained financing from an Islamic bank with a Sharia board. There will never be 99 characters because it is forbidden to depict all of Allah’s attributes.

The 99: Comic book superheroes inspired by the 99 Names of Allah. Apparently with a crossover planned with The Justice League.

In Malaysia, one blogger has developed his own pantheon of comic book characters in a satiric send-up of the Islamist/anti-Islamist divide in that country. It is roughly based on the X-men mutants series of comic books.

Here are a few of the characters:

On October 1st, Issue #1 of my DC comics miniseries Vixen: Return of the Lion hit stores. Vixen is a minor character in the DC Universe who recently rose to prominence when she was added to the Justice League, run by the most famous trifecta in comics: Superman, Batman and Wonderwoman. RotL is the first miniseries dedicated to a black heroine that DC has ever published. I’ve become the first Muslim ever to write Superman and Batman. One small step for comics, one respectable leap for minority writers and characters.

Here’s a glowing review from Earth 2. (Starts about halfway through the podcast and continues for about eight minutes.)

Racialicious is undergoing a Muslim invasion! :D

Jehanzeb writes about Muslim women in comic books (part 1, part 2), which MMW also featured a few months ago.

Shawna shares her experiences growing up as a Muslim in the Bible belt.

In case any of you are curious, this was ComicCon. However, a bunch of people came with copies of CAIRO for me to sign, and also copies of COMIC BOOK TATTOO, so that was nice. I bummed around with Wajahat Ali, who was covering the convention for AltMuslim. He became the second Muslim ever to enter the Sanctum Sanctorum, ie the secret DC company lounge on the show manager’s floor. I saw Stan Lee. And hung out with Percy Carey, who is one of the coolest and most grounded people I know. So all in all, a good if sleepless weekend.

Few links about Muslim women in art. I can’t promise bikini shots in my links, but they’re interesting nonetheless.

    Sooraya Qadir: Niqabi X-woman

Pakistani director Mehreen Jabar’s film Ramchand Pakistani is the only Pakistani movie featured in NY’s Tribeca Film Festival. (I’m excited to see Pakistani movies moving past depictions of rotund women gyrating their hips – not that there’s anything wrong with that…)

Clinton’s library in Arkansas is hosting an art show containing artwork by women from the Muslim world. It is called, what else, Breaking the Veil.

The Objectification of Women in Graphic Novels. I’d like to hear Willow’s take on this – what considerations went into depicting the characters in Cairo, specifically the women?

I love superhero movies, but watching them in today’s political climate is like waiting to get kicked in the gut. Iron Man was no exception. It’s one of the best superhero movies to date, but gets bogged down in the same old tropes when it comes to Islam, the military and the blessed role of a messianic America. Yaman has a very good analysis.

This is not one of my favorites, but it is related to the first, and helps to clarify the story-line of the first, even if you aren’t able to read Farsi.

    Iranian Police Cartoon #7

It is the longer, thin noses of the two westernized women that fascinate me about this particular cartoon.

As odd as it may seem, the more I get involved with the conversation about religion in comics the more convinced I become that the art form will be a really big part of revitalizing faith across doctrinal boundaries. (I swear I’m not just saying that because I write them.) I was on this panel today at the New York Comicon, and the response was really enthusiastic. People seem really thirsty for new ways to express a healthy religious impulse.
