Interview with Naif al-Mutawa, the creator of Islamic comic book (the 99)
I think I just came up with an idea for a comic book series.
The 99, a Sharia-compliant version of the X-Men, was actually created to counter ‘jihadist’ propaganda, claims this Indian newspaper.
The franchise, which was created as a cartoon strip three years ago to counter the effects of jihadist agitprop on Muslim minds, is poised to make its debut on British television this year.
….The 99 has faced resistance in the Middle East, particularly in Saudi Arabia, where it was only passed by the country’s censors when it gained financing from an Islamic bank with a Sharia board. There will never be 99 characters because it is forbidden to depict all of Allah’s attributes.
The Times has this headline:
World’s first Muslim superheroes, the 99, out to conquer the West
We have already had some Muslim superhumans making an appearance in the Ultimates; though arguably they were more supervillains than superheroes (debatable given that they actually acheive the aim of removing US reliance on superheroes to implement foreign policy by the end). These heroes seem more Islamic but the narrative appears similar in that the primary target seems to be the US and not any injustice in the ME region itself.
The 99: Comic book superheroes inspired by the 99 Names of Allah. Apparently with a crossover planned with The Justice League.
Also covered by Riazat Butt, though why not one of their arts/pop culture correspondents?
In Malaysia, one blogger has developed his own pantheon of comic book characters in a satiric send-up of the Islamist/anti-Islamist divide in that country. It is roughly based on the X-men mutants series of comic books.
Here are a few of the characters:
This May Day, do something good for your planet, your bookshelf and your friendly neighborhood comic book author all at once. Spread the word! Facebook it! Twitter it! Forward it!
My copy of Air Volume 1 just arrived.
It is also worth noting that Air, Vol.2: Flying Machine is available for pre-order.
Thab, you had one shipped all the way out to the UAE?? I’m touched.
I think Vol. 2 comes out in October, so it’ll be a bit of a wait.
On October 1st, Issue #1 of my DC comics miniseries Vixen: Return of the Lion hit stores. Vixen is a minor character in the DC Universe who recently rose to prominence when she was added to the Justice League, run by the most famous trifecta in comics: Superman, Batman and Wonderwoman. RotL is the first miniseries dedicated to a black heroine that DC has ever published. I’ve become the first Muslim ever to write Superman and Batman. One small step for comics, one respectable leap for minority writers and characters.
Here’s a glowing review from Earth 2. (Starts about halfway through the podcast and continues for about eight minutes.)
