  Collective punishment: The Pakistani Taliban burned down an entire village in Orakzai yesterday.

  Sixty-three homes were torched by the Taliban in the town of Tori Mela in the Feroze Khel region of Arakzai after the residents were ordered to leave.

  “Local people said the Tehrik-i-Taliban [Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan] had ‘punished’ tribesmen because of their refusal to stay on in the village and support them in their fight against security forces,” Dawn reported. Most of the residents had fled the region once fighting broke out between the Taliban and security forces in November.

  Media Matters has put together a concentrated mass of garbage in the form of a roundup article of right-wing media efforts to demonize Muslims over the last 24 hours.

  It appears that ‘political correctness’, ie, the effort on the part of well-intentioned Americans to be fair and just and not ascribe collective guilt, is as much a target as Muslims.

  Amnesty International is expressing concern that the Pakistani Army may be engaging in collective punishment against the Mehsud tribe in South Waziristan.

  The Pakistani military has refused to allow members of the tribe, some of whom are involved in the senior leadership of the Pakistani Taleban, to use major roads to flee the conflict zone, witnesses told Amnesty International.

  “Mehsud tribespeople, including women and children, are being punished on the roads as they flee simply because they belong to the wrong tribe,” said Sam Zarifi, director of Amnesty International’s Asia-Pacific programme. “This could amount to collective punishment, which is absolutely prohibited under international law.” ‘

  Following on from the news that Beitullah Mehsud’s wife has been killed by a missile from a US drone, comes news that Pakistani is using colonial era laws to target any member of the Mehsud tribe, to which the Pakistani Taliban leader belongs:

  The Pakistani government has declared war on Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud and his network of several thousand fighters in the nearby tribal district of South Waziristan. And under regulations formulated a century ago by British colonial rulers, Pakistan’s tribes are still bound by a legal concept known as “collective responsibility,” under which any tribal cmember can be punished for the crimes of another.

  Collective punishment of this sort contravenes international law, as noted by Joshua Foust:

  The [Washington] Post doesn’t quite get around to explaining that the collective punishment provisions within the Frontier Crimes Regulations are, technically, violating international law (and during conflict are considered War Crimes).

  It is also seems to be a thoroughly stupid way to defeat militancy.
