I’ve never been big on national pride, team pride, or school pride, until today, when my alma mater really earned it. This victory is part of the ongoing Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign.

Today you can hardly utter the acronym BDS without hearing that the very idea is anti-semitic.
But in the February 1921 edition of The Atlantic Magazine, Prof. Albert T. Clay (Assyrologist at the University of Pennsylvania) described how the Zionist incomers to Palestine were imposing their politics on the pre-existing Jewish minority there, which was largely made up of religious, non-Zionist Jews.
Ironically, their tactics comprised
1. Boycotting non-Zionist Jewish businesses;
2. Divestment of Zionist funds from non-Zionist Jews;
3. Sanctions such as threatening the removal of non-Zionist Jews from office, the closure of their businesses, denial of essential services to them, and their exclusion from any dealings with other Jews…

The right-wing American Family Association, having most recently been in the news for calling for the US government to purge the military of all Muslims, is now gearing up for it’s annual ‘war against the war on Christmas’ campaign.
The AFA fights this “war” by calling for boycotts on retailers who don’t use the word Christmas in their advertising and in-store promotions. This year they are singling out Gap Stores, which also owns the brands Old Navy and Banana Republic.
It’s revealing though that Gap actually is using the word “Christmas” in their advertising, but they are also aggressively and prominently trying to be inclusive of non-Christians that also have holidays around the same time (video).
Perhaps it isn’t the absence of the word ‘Christmas’ so much as it is the effort to be inclusive and respect diversity that has the AFA so riled up.
The AFA publishes a “naughty and nice” list, where the ‘naughty’ are targets of the boycott. The ‘naughties’ can be taken as a proxy list of companies that value and respect diversity, and therefore are proper and ideal companies from which to purchase your Eid gifts for next week.
In addition to the Gap stable of brands mentioned above, Nordstroms, Barnes and Noble, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Radio Shack and Victoria’s Secret (yes, that Victoria’s Secret) made the “naughty” list, and so are also all excellent choices for gift buying.

MasterCard accused of backing ‘extreme settlers.’
An Israeli peace organization has launched an international campaign against MasterCard to protest the eviction of Palestinians from a village in East Jerusalem.
Gush Shalom, a left-wing Israeli activist group, is protesting the inclusion of a coupon from the right-wing Israeli group Elad in the monthly statements issued by the Israeli MasterCard company Isracard. Gush Shalom says the coupons, which offer discounted tours of the ancient City of David managed by Elad, are helping to promote the ‘Judaization’ of East Jerusalem.
