Black men are now officially lumped in with Arabs and Muslim men around the world as potential terrorists and dangers to the West in the wake of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab’s attempted Christmas day suicide bombing.

It looks like America is getting rid of its Civil Rights so that the government can actively profile all persons who are as General McInerney said on Fox News, “are Muslim and between the ages of 18-24.” Both he and Newt Gingrich won’t say stop all people brown or black skinned; the majority will draw this conclusion on their own. The operative words are “discriminating based upon behavior.”

As much as people willfully fool themselves into thinking that the “stepped up” efforts by security agencies will be spent on reviewing the suspicious actions of passengers, there is not enough time management resources to properly train and educate TSA employees to become astute observers of suspicious behavior. Instead TSA workers will revert to the easier way to stopping “the enemies” – discriminate based upon name, religious affiliation, race and ethnicity.

USA Today: ‘Blacks still drawn to Islam despite FBI raids.’

Sekou Jackson is used to the questions: Why does he need to leave a work meeting to pray? Don’t black Muslims convert to Islam in jail? Why would you even want to be Muslim?

“It’s kind of a double whammy to be African-American and Muslim,” said Mr. Jackson, who studies the Navy at the National Academy of Science in Washington. “You’re going to be judged.”

Mr. Jackson’s struggle may have gotten harder when the FBI on Wednesday raided a Detroit-area warehouse used by a Muslim group. The FBI said the group’s leader preached hate against the government, trafficked in stolen goods and belonged to a radical group that wants to establish a Muslim state in America. The imam of the group’s mosque, a black American named Luqman Ameen Abdullah, was killed in a shootout with agents. The FBI says he resisted arrest and fired a gun.

No post racial America for Farrakhan. He is a great speaker and one of those people who is one half crazy, one half brilliant, and 3 halfs ego-maniac (yeah, that’s 5/2s, I know). I heartily recommend old Farrakhan Speaks videos for those who aspire to public speaking. He is a master.

Anyway, he’s in the news urging black muslims to remain pissed:

The 76-year-old Nation of Islam leader said in a speech commemorating the 14th anniversary of the Million Man March that people shouldn’t become pacified by the election of the first black president.

“This can pacify you and lull you to sleep in a dangerous time, making you think that we live in a post-racial America — when the opposite is true,” he said to loud applause.

The Chicago-based Nation of Islam has embraced black nationalism since its founding in the 1930s, and has used Obama’s election as a launching point for celebration, intellectual discussion and a call to action.

“You may not be pleased with everything he’s saying and doing, but you have to understand that he’s been voted in to take care of the affairs of a nation, and not yours and mine particularly,” Farrakhan said. “He’s the American president, not the black president.”

Richard Reddie, author of Black Muslims: Why are a Growing Number of Young Black Men Converting to Islam?, writes about what his research has found:

What I also found of real interest was the fact that the vast majority of those interviewed had some previous connection to Christianity, either as former church attendees or through having relatives with firm ecclesiastical connections. This differs from white converts who tend to have no previous religious experience.

below tariq talks about the “2 million black muslims” number bandied about. doesn’t seem likely. how could this number come abut? it is 1/3 of 6 million muslims. but here’s another possibility: a much higher % of black americans than 1% were identified as muslim at some point. in other words, this might be a point of evidence in favor of a “high churn” religious community.

some religious groups, like buddhists, are very high churn. people switch in and switch out a really high rate. that means there are probably more ex-buddhists in the united states than buddhists. american buddhism is a relatively open community which one can tailor to personal needs. i don’t think for white americans islam operates in the same way, the social costs & stigma are much higher. this might go a way to explain the much lower frequency of conversion to islam than buddhism. but with black americans the stigma or barrier to converting to islam is far lower. but concomitantly, this would probably increase churn as the commitment filter is a lot lower.
