  Turkish defence snub worries Israel.

  Turkey has said that it banned Israel from an international air exercise due to begin last week because of its offensive in the Gaza Strip last December.
  ….

  Haaretz, the Israeli newspaper, reported that Israel’s foreign ministry had convened an emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss Turkey’s decision.

  A senior source at the ministry told Haaretz that there were concerns that strategic ties with Turkey were in jeopardy after the Gaza assault of December 2008 and January.

  Danny Ayalon, deputy Israeli foreign minister, seemed to be trying to temper tensions on Sunday, calling Turkey a “very important strategic anchor in the Mideast”.

  The effort to “temper tensions” had been thrown over the side by this morning when Israel reverted to aggressive form and is now threatening to cut arms sales to Turkey.

  Israel is one of Turkey’s main military suppliers and over the years has refurbished a wide range of Turkish equipment, and sold Ankara all manner of electronic equipment in which Israel’s defense industry specializes.

  No surprises that the US remains the biggest supplier and spender of arms to other governments. With the Chinese and Russians closing the spending gap on the US, global military spending reached a record in 2008, despite the financial and economic crises (though, at this stage, this is probably due to a lag in record keeping and the completion of pre-existing agreements). Interestingly, three Arab countries, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and (oddly) Morocco were some of the biggest spenders on arms outside the OECD. Saudi Arabia and the UAE make sense given the geopolitical significance of the area and the stand off with Iran. Morocco seems harder to contextualise. As far as I can see, its main military efforts are in its ongoing occupation of Western Sahara, or combatting the emergence of the North African version of al-Qaida. Anyone have any ideas?

  The UAE has seized a North Korean ship bound for Iran:

  The United Arab Emirates has seized a cargo of North Korean weapons being shipped to Iran, which would have violated a U.N. embargo on arms exports from the communist state, Western diplomats said on Friday.

  The weapons seized on Aug. 14 included rocket launchers, detonators, munitions and ammunition for rocket-propelled grenades, they said. The ship, called the ANL-Australia, was Australian-owned and flying a Bahamas flag.

  Diplomats said the UAE reported the incident, which occurred

  two weeks ago, to the Security Council sanctions committee on North Korea. The committee sent letters to Tehran and Pyongyang on Aug. 25 informing them of the seizure and demanding a response within 15 days.

  The New York Times has another report on how arms sent by the US to Afghanistan may be ending up in the hands of insurgents in the country.

  And again, it is worth pointing out that back in 2006 Unreported World investigated found good evidence of this:

  An arms dealer says commanders from the old Northern Alliance are importing weapons, re-arming themselves and selling weapons to their old enemies the Taliban. The market, he says, is buoyant, because of the insurgency in the south and because there is serious money to be made.

  Between 2003 and 2007 France issued licences worth more than 446 million euros (623 million dollars) for arms exports to Israel. This made France by far the largest supplier of weapons to Israel in the EU.

  An Israeli-owned British company has been drawn into the political controversy over arms sales to Israel prompted by the assault on Gaza.

  UAV Engines, of Lichfield, Staffordshire, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of engines for drones – unmanned aerial vehicles that are becoming critical frontline systems for military and civilian use around the world.

  The company, known as UEL, is owned by the Israel drone specialists Silver Arrow, a subsidiary of the Israeli defence contractor Elbit Systems.
