Karachi bombings: Ulema rally Pakistanis to call for restraint.

Ulema from different schools of thought have condemned the two blasts on Friday, appealed to the people to exercise restraint and pointed out that terrorists are trying to distort the image of Islam and the country.

The Islamic scholars said the perpetrators of the incidents of terrorism were neither Muslims nor Pakistanis, adding that they were trying to divide the people of the same faith.
    ….

Maulana Hassan Zafar Naqvi ruled out any sectarian aspect of the tragedy, recalling that Shias and Sunnis lived together and would not allow any such conspiracy to succeed in future. However, the series of attacks on mourners was a bad omen, he said, adding that conspiracies were being hatched to distort the image of Islam across the world.

He said the terrorists were enemies of Islam, Muslims and Pakistan, but, the government could not be absolved from its responsibility. “The government should tell people how many of the criminals arrested in the past had been sentenced to death,” he said.

Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman, the chief of the Central Ruet Hilal Committee, had the same views to share. He said those behind the tragedy were bringing a bad name to Islam, Muslims and Pakistan. He asked the people to keep their sentiments under control, as violence would only strengthen those who were trying to destablise the country.

    Emptying out the mosques.

Al Jazeera reports that in Islamabad, the mosques were half-empty in the aftermath of the Taliban’s mosque attack in Rawalpindi.

Elsewhere, Al Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn offered “condolences” to innocent bystanders killed in its attacks.

And the US military released a new study asserting that 85 percent of Al Qaeda’s victims between 2004 and 2008 have been Muslims, and in the last two years (2006-2008) where it’s attacks have been more limited to Muslim majority countries, 98 percent of its victims have been Muslim.

    Idle threat/thug life watch.

Al Qaeda on the Arabian Peninsula is marketing a new line of attacks to the ‘mujahid’ in the West. Targets include “secular media figures and writers who mock the orders of religion and those who promote and justify (the actions) of infidel rulers.”

Muslim writers who prefer a secular pluralistic polity – which includes at least some of us who write for this blog – or who oppose indiscriminate violence (against our home countries or anywhere else) would probably be included in one of those definitions.

The writer, Abu Basir Nasser al-Wahayshi, shows what a thoughtful guy he is as he recommends a very particular and selective form of violence for us:

“Knives are a good remedy for some and … (for others) severe beating until they are confined to bed or lose one of their senses,” added the militant leader.

Knives and baseball bats – I guess for Al Qaeda this is an example of restraint…
