I have posted more thoughts on the Obama phenomenon and his support amongst his East African brethren here.
One of the things that may increasingly come to light is that Obama is not a traditional black American - meaning one (even if they are part non-black) that is the descendant of slaves - in spite of portraying himself that way early in his career with his association with Dr. Wright.
I suppose the question is “What is African-American”? My personal definition is one that is the decendent of slaves brought to the Americas - which would include people like Derek Jeter and Alicia Keys, but not Hakeem Olajuwon or Barack Obama. Perhaps “African-American” (or whatever you want to call it) should be an ethnic group

Ebony magazine recently had an article about the tensions between Somalis and black Americans in Columbus, Ohio. Charles and Jamerican Muslimah (part one and part two) have both commented on the situation since they live in Columbus, OH and Minneapolis (respectively) which have the two largest populations of Somalis in the country.
I have a few comments of my own here.
One thing I have noticed is the increasing tendency in many cities to say “Desi”, “Arab” or “Somali” and mean “Muslim” and vice versa.

The list is long. Indeed, unending. However, the solution to all our problems is always simple: return to an imagined past which, mercifully for the people of the seventh century, never existed. Every time, a scientist in the West is ready with an invention, our ready made answer is: we knew about it 1,400 years ago what the West has found only now.

An article in Newsweek on the effort to reinterpret Islamic theology
Momentum is building within the Muslim world to re-examine what had seemed immutable tenets of the faith, to challenge what had been taken as literal truths and to open wide the doors of interpretation (ijtihad) that some schools of Islam tried to close centuries ago.
Personally, I believe that an ‘American’ Islam will take a different shape than that of the Muslim World

These two rulings were including in an email by salafists from a scholar (that lives in Saudi Arabia and has probably never visited the West) giving advice on how to live in the West.
4. Whenever I see a disbeliever with something nice like a beautiful car is it permissible for me to say, ” Mashallah!” to him?
Answer: Don’t say that to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)said,” When you meet them walk in a manner that causes them to walk in a narrower path”.
7.Is it permissible for a Muslim to greet the disbelievers with greetings such as Good morning or Good evening first when meeting?
Answer: No don’t give the disbeliever the greetings first. He should walk pass the disbeliever without giving him the greetings. Perhaps the person with intellect can understand that the reason he’s prohibited from receiving greetings of peace is because he’s a Kafir. A kafir doesn’t believe in the religion of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). By not giving the Kafir the greetings he is pulled to Islam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,” When you meet them don’t give them the greetings first.”
Very practical advice indeed. Bet you’d be a real thrill to be around not speaking to anyone and non-Muslims would want to accept Islam very quickly that way

As many of you may have read by now, yet another mentally ill convert set off a bomb in the UK. This is becoming a pattern that I have noticed for a few years now: “radicalized” converts to Islam often have some history of mental illness. Let’s review:
Adam Gadahn - the American lunatic that joined Al-Qaeda - and Richard Reid (the “shoe bomber”) were both alleged to have mental problems. Then there this story that largely went unnoticed in which a young man - who was said to possibly be a convert - accidentally blew himself up near a football stadium in Oklahoma. Whether or not he was Muslim is not known, but his roommates were said to be Muslim and they said that he was studying Islam. Whatever the case, he had been treated for clinical depression since the age of ten. Then last year a mentally ill convert was arrested in New York for allegedly plotting to kill the mayor. And this is an example of a mentally ill convert I met personally while I was living in Memphis.
Even those that are not converts are often mentally disturbed like this suspect as well as this one both from Australia and alleged to be suffering from mental illnesses
This is why I have said for some time now that anti-Western rants must be banned in the mosques in a near dictatorial manner as these mentally disturbed individuals can and will take things and run with it.
