In an interview which the website said a Yemeni freelance journalist had held with Anwar al-Awlaki, the US-born preacher said he had been a teacher of the Nigerian suspect in the Dec 25 attempted bombing of the US-bound plane.
“The mujahid brother, Umar Farouk (Abdulmutallab) … is one of my students. Yes, and there was contact between us. But I did not issue a fatwa (religious edict) to Umar Farouk for this operation,” Awlaki was quoted as saying.

What do you think of his words and his justification for killing civilians because of revenge? And yet there are naive idiotic Muslims in this country who would come to his support. I wonder what Umar Lee has to say about this since Awlaki just admitted his support for killing civilians for revenge, which we all know is a clear violation of Islamic rules of warfare.

Glenn Greenwald is, as is almost always the case, must read as he uses the question of presidential assassination of a citizen like al-Awlaki for his speech to go into wider issues of the imagined “war exception to the constitution” and the extremely dangerous political dynamics of the war on terror that are showing in the Obama Administration and especially since the failed Christmas plane attack.
