Sneering at Avatar is now a fulltime “conservative” bloggin’ genre.
I’m reminded of “conservative” crits of the Star Wars prequels as only enjoyable for 14 yr olds.
Well….Avatar is District 9 rendered for 13 yr olds.
E.D., you are not the target audience…no wonder you and Douthat and Goldberg don’t like it….and no wonder I do!
I’m never going to grow up.
The next 6 years will feature an Avatar trilogy, with parts 2 and 3 released two years apart. The console game will become a staple, merchandising, action figures, t-shirts, spinoffs….just like Star Wars.
Care to guess how much Star Wars has shaped contemporary culture over the last 30 years?
And the 13 yr olds who are watching Avatar today…..will be 19 yr olds voting in the 2016 presidential election.
See how that works?

I dont think you can charitably lump ED in with the mainstream conservatives out there. And I ddnt read his piece as a sneer of the movie at all. In fact his complaint is precisely opposite to the conservatives’ – they say it has an agenda, and he says its devoid of any message at all.
in fact annalee at io9 has the best critique of the film thus far, calling it the ultimate white guilt movie. This is a harsh but quite rigorous critique.
insh i’ll see the movie myself next weekend…

is annalee 13?
thot not.
You either have to be 13 or to be able to get to 13 in your head to relly experience the movie. Dire horses with 6 legs.
The mythos Campbell infused in Star Wars is different, but just as powerful.
I think the core meme of the balance of life, Oneness, wahdat al wujud is the myth message, not “white guilt”. Universalism…we are the same, with same dreams and desires….the other is you.
Avatar may also be the knee in the curve of full immersion film experience….the bridge to eventual stimsuits and holodecks. Extreme technology costs extreme bucks, but Avatar looks highly cost viable. More movies like Avatar will be made…..I’m still hoping for Snowcrash and Ringworld.
Inshallah you can still access your inner 13 year old to experience wonder and magic, Aziz, when you see the movie.

Oh my habbibi.
That was a simply awful review…..she totally didn’t get District 9 either.
I pity her a lot…..no magicks for poor annalee.
She apparently missed all the scenes that humanized Christopher Johnson, and humanized Wickus deftly in the process.
very sad.
MY favorite review of Avatar is TI commenter AA’s.
…
Shame on you Haibane…..it is the message of Mononoke Hime.
