I find the near-universal “conservative” denigration of Avatar to be hilarious, given that many of them “liked” District 9. Avatar is just District 9 (rated R) rendered in PG-13 and gamertech.
And I predict it is the Star Wars for the next generation.
It is already the 4th highest grossing film of all time.
I liked Wade’s comparison of religion to language.
Culture is a language as well…..one that “conservatives” have forgotten how to speak.

2nd highest as of end of the day today, actcually
I tried both saturday and sunday to see it, but couuldnt get seats – even after pre-buying tickets!
The best review by far I think is by sepoy – who notes its not a film about war vs anti-war, but a movie about pro-mech-war vs pro-eco-war. I think liberals (well, progressives) are reading too much into the movie just as conservatives are.

The message of District 9 is EXACTLY the same as the message of Avatar……
the Other is you.
I guess you missed the human/alien DNA hybridization theme in both movies, Aziz.
That is a deeply, profoundly, anti-conservative message…..and it is The Central Meme of liberal inclusivity and humanitarianism.
It is how Obama won.
And right now you can’t deny the only platform the teabaggers have is Fear ….fear of the unknown, fear of the Other.
The Star Wars parallels are obvious…..lay along console game, part 2 of trilogy in progress, target audience, action figures, enormous earnings, etc.
The Revolution will be Avatarred.
I for one welcome Our New Multicolored Liberal Alignment in Perpetuity.

I like to think of Avatar as a daisy cutter packed with liberal memetics aimed right at the heart of 13 to 30 year olds…..the voters of 2016.

Don’t forget the perennial philosophy which centers the message. Here’s my take on top of one of the conservative review:

yes…it is also the message of Mononoke Hime.
Alas, some of us are limited to being San, while others can rise to be Ashitaka.

I think we should have a post on the concept of Oneness and that balance of nature.
