  Here’s the one video that the NY Times singled out for criticizing religious practice. It’s called Laga Reh (“carry on”) by Shehzad Roy.

  The specific issue being criticized is fatalism in Islam. The last I saw this issue discussed was back in February at the ‘Gates of Vienna vs The World vs LGF’ blog by that site’s Muslim blogger whose handle is “The Sphinx” in response to a JAFI:

  Also let me give you a small insight on Muslim mentality. You will find Muslims saying “Insha’ Allah” all the time, myself being no exception, but this isn’t down to any laziness, nor some supposed “fatalistic” streak.

  One day, back to the very early days of Islam, a man rode his camel to go to prayer, and didn’t tie it up before entering the mosque, thinking that by God’s will nothing will happen. Yet, it ran away. When he told the Prophet, the reply he got was: “Old man, tie up your camel and rely on God”.

  Bottom line is, take things into your own hands and make sure they happen. Whether they really happen goes down to whether God wished it upon you or not. That sort of thing keeps us humble before our creator, gives us more joy when things go right, and makes us maintain hope when they don’t go as planned.

  I take away from these two sources that a) fatalism is an issue, and b) Rightly-guided Muslims should listen to ‘The Sphinx.’
