Wow, missed this, shocking really. Warsi is such a minor figure really, never heard of her before Cameron decided to spice up the shadow bench by promoting her to it; so surprised she drew such a strong reaction.
There does seem something in bad taste in attacking a woman like this, which is arguably a hypocrritical position.
I agree, she’s a nobody. She couldn’t even get herself elected. Sticking her with the peers was one way Cameron could make his cabinet look ‘diverse’.

She was wheeled out on the Question Time edition with Nick Griffin and she did alright though I wasn’t really impressed with her performance, bit disappointed as she was the the only South Asian on the panel and the only non-White politician there. Luckily, Bonnie Greer was there to speak some sense
Woah! Major, major overgeneralistion there Willow.
This act was carried out by Al-Muhajigoon, who are a loud-mouthed bunch of fools. Them, plus a few comments on message boards does not equal UK Muslims being backwards.
Forgive me, all I have to assess Islam in Britain are Thabet’s musings and Brick Lane But right or wrong, I don’t think being un-integrated (or anti-assimilationist) and being backward are the same thing.
True. However, I would say claims that the U.K Muslim community are poorly integrated are greatly exaggerated. People confuse having a strong cultural identity with self segregation.

I have some sympathy with Willow’s position here; some of this has to do with the immigration profile of Muslim community in the UK compared to the US. The US has a lot more middle-class professionals; whereas many Muslim immigrants in the UK come from poorer and for the 1st generation at least rural backgrounds (very concentrated from certain areas as well, a huge proportion of Bangladeshis, frex, come from just one district, Sylhet and many Pakistanis come from Mirpur) also you don’t get the concentration in some urban areas such as Bradford, Leeds or Blackburn where Muslims make up a sizeable proportion of the town. Few towns in the US I think would be like this. Muslims in the UK also suffer from specific problems, such as a very high unemployment rate – nearly double the national average and a much lower average rate of educational achievement. The reasons for this are complex and they are not replicated by other minority groups (British Asians from Indian, frex, have some of the lowest unemployment rates and highest educational attainments as do Chinese and East Asian minorities) so I think there is a general feeling that somehow Muslims are ‘being left behind’ or do suffer from some social and economic problems and I think this partly (but ONLY partly) explains some of the inclinations for extreme positions (by a minority of course).
I think alienation from the broader political process is more serious problem though.

I see why people compare the immigrant communities of the UK versus the immigrant communities of the US but this whole analysis/comparison gets much more complicated when you consider the Blackamerican muslim community.

True, I always argued that immigrants to Europe, and to the UK occupy a role closer to African Americans than Muslim immigrants to the US. I know for Indians this is a big difference between their structural role in the US compared to the UK.
A key reason is that immigration to Europe wasn’t biased towards selected groups of highly educated and mobile invdividuals and until quite late there was no points-based system. This meant that the type of immigration was more skewed towards unskilled and semi-skilled workers and small businesspeople.
I followed your links and have to conclude those guys are flat-out nuts. She’s “evil”, she’s a “shaytan”, “If their was a true islamic shariah court anywhere near here she would be hanging from the gallows,” etc.
Interestingly, the news wires this morning are full of stories about this incident, publicity that is going to allow Sayeeda Warsi to pivot to higher profile political positions, if she chooses.

There is in certain areas and amongst certain groups of Muslims, a disgusting lack of adab and human decency. Especially towards women.
I don’t care if Warsi is an apostate blashpheming Qur’an, you do not throw eggs or anything else at people. The Prophet (saws) never did anything like this, in fact people threw rocks at him and he did not retaliate. (This should not be taken to mean that Muslims should never retaliate)
Being a Muslim means developing in one’s self a certain nobility in character and gentleness. Even when Warsi attempted to speak with them, these so called Muslims rudely interrupted her and called her names. Arrogance is a foul cloak that covers any taqwa.

Bang Gully,
I agree that the brothers messed up here and Warsi came out looking like she took the high road.
Still I find it impossible to express outrage over some British “baroness” getting some egg on here while every day Muslims Including Muslim women face unbelievable abuse, torture, jailing, starvation, refugee status, etc. etc. (at the hands of both Muslims and non-Muslims) and much less notice is taken of it or attention paid.
Which is part of why I say the brothers (who I know nothing about) screwed up, if they were trying to draw attention to the plight of Muslims in Afghanistan because by throwing eggs at her they made it about her.

Abu Noor,
I think your in a sense decontextualising what happened here.
That there are Muslims being killed and raped by secular Western kuffar and by munafiqs from within the Muslim ummah is 100% true.
But if they were truly angry about these things, I don’t understand how throwing eggs at a sister who as far as we know is still a Muslim is beneficial. I think me and you agree on that.
Remember, you were willing to give Fareed Zakaria the benefit of the doubt as to being Muslim even though he thinks the Quran is filled with contradictions and has usually been on the side of attacks on Muslims and the secularisation of Muslim society. You were willing to give him much more benefit then I personally would and you based it on Islamic law and adab.
I think if we apply Islamic law and adab in this context we can say that the brothers were wrong to mistreat a Muslimah in public in such a degrading fashion.
I saw the Muhajiroun when they were invited to debate at my college. It was my conclusion that they are a bunch of wannabes and posers with no substance much less qualifications. In addition, I asked one extremely qualified Shaykh about them and he happened to be on a radio show with one of them. He said that they don’t know the sharia. Another Malaysian friend of mine, from London, said they couldn’t even recite al-Fatiha correctly. This was when he prayed behind one of them.

As expected, none of the ‘conservative’ Muslims bothered to comment on what their fellow ‘conservative’ Salafi henchmen have done.

Also, the two bastions of extremist thought are of course praising the act and claim the victim deserved it.
This has to be said, why are British Muslims so fanatical compared to American Muslims?
