A mixed op/ed from Thomas Friedman at the NY Times today talks about the warped narrative propagated by Muslim extremists to mirror the neocon narrative against Islam. It is time for Americans and Pan-Arabs to ask themselves how far they are willing to be warped.
Of Major Hasan, Friedman writes:
What is scary is that even though he was born, raised and educated in America, The Narrative still got to him.
The Narrative is the cocktail of half-truths, propaganda and outright lies about America that have taken hold in the Arab-Muslim world since 9/11. Propagated by jihadist Web sites, mosque preachers, Arab intellectuals, satellite news stations and books — and tacitly endorsed by some Arab regimes — this narrative posits that America has declared war on Islam, as part of a grand “American-Crusader-Zionist conspiracy” to keep Muslims down.
Yes, after two decades in which U.S. foreign policy has been largely dedicated to rescuing Muslims or trying to help free them from tyranny — in Bosnia, Darfur, Kuwait, Somalia, Lebanon, Kurdistan, post-earthquake Pakistan, post-tsunami Indonesia, Iraq and Afghanistan — a narrative that says America is dedicated to keeping Muslims down is thriving.
Although most of the Muslims being killed today are being killed by jihadist suicide bombers in Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan and Indonesia, you’d never know it from listening to their world. The dominant narrative there is that 9/11 was a kind of fraud: America’s unprovoked onslaught on Islam is the real story, and the Muslims are the real victims — of U.S. perfidy.
Hypocritically, he then goes on to tell his own necon ‘cocktail of half-truths, propaganda and outright lies’ to justify the war on terror. The whole world is caught in a vast web of deception.

Glenn Greenwald has an interesting post on his website about this Friedman article.
In it, Greenwald points out the hypocrisy of people like Friedman who back in 2003 had this to say:
ROSE: Now that the war is over, and there’s some difficulty with the peace, was it worth doing?
FRIEDMAN: I think it was unquestionably worth doing, Charlie. I think that, looking back, I now certainly feel I understand more what the war was about . . . . What we needed to do was go over to that part of the world, I’m afraid, and burst that bubble. We needed to go over there basically, and take out a very big stick, right in the heart of that world, and burst that bubble. . . .
And what they needed to see was American boys and girls going from house to house, from Basra to Baghdad, and basically saying: which part of this sentence do you understand? You don’t think we care about our open society? . . . . Well, Suck. On. This. That, Charlie, was what this war was about.
We could have hit Saudi Arabia. It was part of that bubble. Could have hit Pakistan. We hit Iraq because we could. That’s the real truth.
So Muslims have reason to address the myriad issues that are affecting the Muslim world surely. But not at the behest of amoral scum such as Friedman.

Jazzak Allahu Kahyr Bang Gully,
You are right to note that not only is Friedman morally odious, but the notion that U.S. foreign policy over the last two decades has been devoted to rescuing Muslims or trying to help free them from tyranny would be a laughable one if so many people weren’t dead.
Whether there is a concerted U.S. effort against Islam or Muslims or War on Islam depends on how one defines a bunch of terms and is undoubtedly as simplistic or false as any other three word summary of complex international relations involving over a billion people and a world “superpower” would be but certainly has an aspect of truth to it as well.

I,m from Malaysia. I just want to ask one simple question to the world. If the American are so righteous and civilise a nation as they claim to be, why in God’s name is, everywhere there’s war on this forsaken earth, there MUST be the American involved. Why not Russia, China, the muslim world and so on..?? England at the least. Why must it be the american. Are they so DAMN righteous..??!! Try to show the world that they are so good, so humanitarian. AND why are the world leaders is so stupid as to believe and go along believing that the american nation is so courages. They attack the poor country like vietnam, afghanistan, the middle east country like iraq..bla..bla..bla.. just on the ground of fighting terrorist and whatsoever excuses,, but in reality they do not even dare to set foot on the small country like cuba and venezuela.. ha..ha.. such a stupid reason and the world leaders believed them.
To me, personally speaking, the american is the most cowardly nation on earth. There is no other nation more coward than the american. If the country can defend themselves using catapault, stone and pebbles, spears and such, the american will say “lloo..that’s a terrorist conutry and we shall war upon them with all our might and hitech war machines but on the other hand if that country has a way to defend themselves like the north korean, the russian, china even the cuban and venezuela, they will say ” ohh.. look we have to settle this in a diplomatic way..!!!
Come on american citizen, open your eyes and see the real truth of what your beloved leaders is pulling your nation into.. They destroyed your natural heritage in the name of development and modernisation and when everything is destroyed, even your prairy dogs are now long extinct, they sent the american throughout the world to save the wild life and jungle in the name of conservation. What a big joke it is to the people who have glue on their eye lid. Come on… open up….
Nobody is going to attack america..what for..just a waste of time and money. What resources do the american have. ..
But in the other way round, the american leaders are afraid of their own shadows. They are afraid that they could not feed their citizen with their own grain. They dont have enough natural resources to sustain their own existence hence the leaders make a very realistic plot that the country is under attack by this and that group. And the best culprit to point to is the Muslim world. And if the american people are so loving as they claim to be, how can they believe such a lame excuses. Could they not see that the countries that their armies are attacking is just a poor country trying to survive. They cant even feed their own families, how on earth can they atack america…ha..ha…
And if the american people are really sound in their mind, could they not see how their great armies being chased away from vietnam. And they ran like fleas… And the viet won the war. It seems that the viet are stronger than the american..BUT… why did the viet not attack america after that..????
But they are not like the american. They do not want war. They just want to live. And again and again the american leaders knows that they can manipulate the american with whatever excuses and surely 100% their citizen will take it all.
And see the tragedy of Iraq, and the death of Saddam Hussein. The take over has taken place with not a single bullet fired. Where is the Weapon of Mass Destruction that is being propagise by your leaders….?
The stories goes that Saddam killed thousand of his political enemies. But now how many children, women and old peoples that the american soldiers killed..in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan ..and god knows where else..??? Saddam killed his enemies, fine… if so ARE THESE CHILDREN, WOMEN, YOUNG AND OLD, ENEMIES to the american…? Why are they being killed..?? Not in america but in their own homeland, their own villages, their own house, their own backyard. And i dare says that most that has being killed dont even know where New York is..?? What other excuses can your leaders gave on that.

Zahir…..Iraq was the last ugly death spasm of Big White Christian Bwana.
Bang Gully is right……we hit Iraq because we could….it was the top hit on the threat/risk matrix and became the prime target for Bush’s misguided attempt to terraform an ancient and complex culture into a tame little brown mirror America,
Bush was just another stupid WEC…he actually believed in his Gog/Magog war, while Rasputian Cheney and Rumsfeld capped his breifing slides with bible quotes to manipulate him.
But WECs are 20% of the american electorate now….the taste of power will soon be just a fabled memory to them.
All the teabagger sound and fury is a tale told by idiots…..soon to signify nothing.
The demographic timer goes tick……tick……..tick.

american….ha.ha.ha..dreaming that they are good samaritans..CIA agents evrywhere on this globe. Harassing this nation..influencing that nation..intefering the internal affair of all the world nation..turning the native into traitor and what else they have not done in their agenda. They even come out with animal police, taking down human who do cruelty to animals…BUT what about their armies, their politician, their leaders. They not only do cruelty to animals but to humans (amongst others, guatanamo bay). Worst than that, they KILLED everthing in their path, animals, children, women and even old people. Not only the children being blown away, the smallest ants, the worms, the beetles etc. is being blown to shred. And why this animal police does not take any legal action against them. ha..ha..how can a nation boasting to be so humanitarian oversees this simple massacre. What a drama..!!
And to the muslim people, stop blaming others for all the mishap that is falling upon you. Its you yourselves that invite all this tragedy to befallen with your own greed, incompetent, laziness etc..etc.. The real ISLAM teaching is the easiest religion ever compared to others. But do you understand your own religion. There is no such things as suicide bombers and such. Those warring people are from the american legacy, not real MUSLIM. Osama ben LAden was formerly with the american to bring down the russian. They are not Jihadist, they are warring parties being used by the american to tear down the muslim world. Saddam Hussain too was in the american team to tear down Iran. While the Islamic leaders themselve are friends to the american. How much assets do this so call islamic leaders spend their wealth in america. Bla..bla…bla.. and all this are just a game of hipocracy. On leave, they spent their times in american casinos and spending money in Harrod..on coming back they told their people, the american are bad..bla…bla..bla.. and the people believe them. So who’s stupid..???? The american or the muslims….????
So open up everybody,, american, christian, muslim whatever…see the real truth. When you passed away..(that is being dead) you will be alone in your graveyard and there you will answer ALONE..to the ONE GOD, whether you are a christian, muslim, buddhist whatever. If you dont believe this try being dead and you’ll get your answer..FOR SURE….

Regardless of Friedman’s myopic vision of past deeds, I think this thread alone contains clear evidence of the problem he poses.
If the Muslim world has not become so sick and decrepid, there would not be such a problem. But alas, you cannot blame a superpower entirely for your own weakness.
At some point, you have to start pointing your little finger at yourself.

geez brother buzz…..how much of the pain and misery in Iraq is directly devolved from the foul Brits deliberately creating a state that would always be at sectarian war with itself? Get a clue.
Buzz 12:25 pm on December 1, 2009 Permalink |
No you get a clue, homey.
You understand nature, selection and evolution. The weak feed the strong. Period.
We can talk about tariqa or we can talk about dunya. In dunya, the duty is strictly to cooperate with your family, your community and be strong. Defend what’s right.
Waiting for the West’s philanthropy is not a good game plan. So let’s call it like it is: weak is weak. Corrupt is corrupt. Hypocritical is hypocritical. And philanthropy, in dunya, is generally what happens AFTER you have raped and plundered. (Gates Foundation)
It is a religious duty to be strong and smart, not whine and complain.

My problem with the view you’re expressing here is this. Telling yourself don’t wait for others (your oppressors) rely on Allah and then yourself is great. Telling your own community “we should not wait on our oppressors but we should rely on Allah and ourselves” is good. Looking at another group, especially a group you are part of oppressing and saying you guys should stop whining and rely on yourselves is being an a-hole and an apologist for Thulum.
So what you are saying about the Muslim world I agree with you if you consider yourself part of that world (the ummah). If you consider yourself part of America or the West and you take a line like that I take a very different view of your statements.
You see what I mean?
There’s a difference between the NOI telling Black people to rely on self and David Duke telling Black people to rely on self.
Buzz 5:38 pm on December 1, 2009 Permalink
I consider myself part of both Islamic (as a spiritual and ethical path) and an American (as a citizen of a country and the world).
In both cases, ahole status notwithstanding, the advice is the same. I would expect and respect that advice coming from a right-winger. “Muslim world. get your shit together. No one respects weakness. Want to bring Israel to the table for peace talks? Show strength. Want the US to stop exploiting you? Show economic viability. Want the world to respect you? Show the beauty of Islam and put a muzzle on the derelicts.
In the pursuit of strength come the answers to attain strength. Not in the pursuit of victimhood. That is idle chatter. Nothing more.
