this whole confiscating passports of laborers thing in Dubai is basically indentured slavery.

So not surprised. That seems to be the way of shady organizations. The St. Petersburg Times reported last weekend the “church” of Scientology holds the passports for its members who work on its cruise ship, the Freewinds. You can read more about this, and a guy’s insane escape tactics, here.
