Cliff Kincaid, the editor of Accuracy in Media, a right-wing advocacy group that “attack[s] journalists that write about and seem sympathetic to leftist and even centrist movements” has mounted a vigorous defense of the recent Honduran military coup as “a successful effort by Honduran patriots to preserve their constitutional system of government from an international alliance of communists and socialists backed by Iran.”
Yes, Iran.
Interestingly, Kincaid makes exactly the same criticisms of Obama that American right-wingers made of John F Kennedy’s policies toward African nationalist movements in the early 1960s, who accused Kennedy of siding with the “Marxists” (hardliners preferred the colonialist governments). Kennedy and his advisers saw themselves as siding with the future leaders of Africa.
AIM has taken the template of justification for military takeovers throughout the developing world and substituted Iran in the place once held by the Soviet Union. Given AIM’s history and the people it employs, this is no surprise:
* AIM supported the Reagan government-created guerrilla group known as the Nicaraguan Contras.
* AIM board member Bernard Yoh “was a hitman for the Shanghai police during the Sino-Japanese war and organized the South Vietnamese counterinsurgency forces during the Vietnam War. In the 1964 Brazilian coup, Yoh advised the Brazilian generals.” He is also a Rev. Sun Myung Moon follower.
* The head of an affiliated group, Accuracy in Academia, praised Salvadoran politician Roberto D’Aubuisson– a death squad commander whose nickname was “The Blowtorch” after his favorite torture device.
* AIM has been a prominent supporter of the Chilean Lobby in the past. The Chilean Lobby supported the military government under Augusto Pinochet that came into power through a coup in 1973.
* Board member Eugene Lyons is the retired editor of Reader’s Digest. He is or was also a member of American Friends of Katangan Freedom Fighters [pro-Belgium, pro-colonial, anti-communist militia in the Congo supported by US hardliners in the early 1960s], American Chilean Council, Committee of One Million, Young Americans for Freedom, and the American Jewish League Against Communism.
* Board member Midge Decter is exec dir of Committee for the Free World, which has been particularly active in backing right-wing paramilitary movements in Latin America. Former Assistant Secretary of State Elliott Abrams is her son-in-law and insane Norman Podhoretz (who believes the West is currently engaged in World War IV against ‘Islamofascism’), editor of the right-wing journal Commentary is her husband.
Decter is also a famous anti-feminist who notoriously told Time magazine in 1972, “the pursuit of orgasm for a woman is an entirely irrelevant undertaking.”
