This comes as no surprise – as Karen Armstrong has noted in print and interview many times, mainstream religion is relatively unimportant to Europeans, although non-traditional forms of religion may be on the increase, but perhaps these are not seen as comparable to traditional religions by many people – e.g. new-ageism, human potential, etc

This Gallup report suggests British Muslims are less secular.
“In all three cities, strong majorities of Muslims — 68% in Paris, 85% in Berlin, and 88% in London — say religion is an important part of their daily lives. These figures stand in stark contrast to those found among the general population: Only 23% of French, 36% of British, and 41% of German respondents overall consider religion to be an important part of their lives.”

This goes a long way toward explaining why Americans are so much more open to Muslim/general religious accomodations and why Europeans are not. We are far more live and let live about religion, and Europeans generally are not. The Austrian culinary school story a couple weeks struck me as peculiar because I’m nearly certain something like that would not happen here in the States — most culinary schools would make exceptions for certain foods due to religious reasons etc. The number of hijab bans being proposed also illustrate this resistance to introduction of religion into public life.
