Heck yeah. This year I’ll be fasting at a higher latitude than I ever have before, so I’m a little nervous. (47 degrees…in the Shafa’i madhab special rules for combining prayers kick in at 48 degrees.) Fortunately the equinox is coming so it shouldn’t be terrible.

i’d love to read a blog from muslims who live way up north or down south on the globe, how ramadan (and praying) actually works for them.

on a related issue, have you or anyone else seen interesting conversations online about the fiqh of menstraution vis-a-vis ramadan? i remember meeting a very well read orthodox muslim woman several years ago who told me she still fasts while she has her period. i’ve always wondered if other women (or muslim cultures) do this.

making up days all by yourself is a drag. like being suspended and forced to go to summer school instead.

I hear you on the caffeine bit - i actually consume multiple cups of coffee and coke throughout the day so I had to basically go cold turkey this week. I get terrible cafein withdrawal headaches and am suffering this week so I will be acclimated when ramadan starts. insh.

I am also going to buy a bottle of Aleve. That is probably the most important part of the predawn meal :P

I’m strangely excited about Ramadan this year. Strange, because I’m usually not. Maybe because I actually like the mosque we attend now.

Ramadan does tend to creep up every year when I have some semblance of a regular exercise and healthy diet routine going. I’m hoping to maintain it during Ramadan, but avoiding samosas at iftaar will be a challenge.

I’ve never heard of fasting during menstruation (not that I’ve done any research - just following what my momma told me growing up). Frankly I’m happy for the break when it comes…but yea, making up fasts by yourself is NO fun.

yes, there’s a lot to be said about coffee-management during ramadan. outside ramadan, i usually drink 3-4 cups a day. last year, i had coffee at suhur and at iftar… that was enough to keep off the headaches.

as for maintaining an exercise schedule…my husband tried to continue training for a marathon through ramadan a couple years ago, but didn’t get far (he still ran the marathon though.)

I have a pronounced lack of spiritual excitemetabout Ramadan, instead dreading the lack of water- which for me is the hardest part.
On the plus side- I always say my prayers on time during Ramadan.
Making up the prayers is exactly like summmer school.
I’m always fired up immediately after and want to finisn it off- but have to wait a couple of days and my enthusiam also diminishes significantly with time.
I get the coffee headache too- and also down a cup in the morning and tae a sip of milk and a cup of coffee at iftar.
I think I’m the template of what NOT to do during Ramadan.
Also, in 10 years- I never seem to finish the Qur’an, but last year I got closer than the year beofre so- well- it’s movement anyway.

Are there no muslims anywhere discussing the Democratic National Convention, or upcoming presdiential election?
Sorry to disrupt- but I am looking for a blog and cannot find one.
    Maybe someone could direct me?
