Sometime in the not-so-distant future, people will look back and shake their heads when they hear this much fuss was made over a square yard of polyester. I predict this era in Islamic history will be seen like the bloomer scandal of the early 20th century, when women started wearing pants and people predicted the end of civilization.

Just thinking out loud here - Between the 4 experiences (if your friend and Willow decide to write something themselves), we have quite a range of different perspectives covered on this issue: someone who put it on and took it off, someone who thought about taking it off but kept it on, someone who took it off and is thinking of putting it back on, and someone who recently decided to put it on.

Nice piece Andrea. I penned a rant a couple of days ago talking about my own experience, coming from an immigrant perspective. Got some thoughtful comments. Its interesting to me how our struggle is similar in many ways, but different too (i.e. our experiences in the Muslim world).

Yes, Willow, let us know if you write about re-jabbing. And to Aziz: actually my beliefnet editor, Dilshad Ali, who recently started wearing hijab is going to write her own piece later this month. The idea was to have the two pieces run side to side.

Andrea, thta was a thoughtful piece indeed. I think that you did a great job at capturing the nuance of the convert’s approach to Islam, in contrast to someone like myself who inherited a neat tidy package of cultural and religious tradition. We have it easier because we arent forced to confront each issue from first principles, the way you have to.

Willow, a piece by you on your thinking of re-jabing would be a great complement to Andrea’s. The two pieces together would probably be really useful for others, at different points in their own journeys.

A thoughtful piece. When I was talking with Wajahat Ali at the ComicCon recently he mentioned a lot of women seem to be taking off their scarves in the area where he lives. I haven’t been wearing one since I’ve been back in the US, but (as I mentioned on Muse’s blog) I’m thinking of starting again.
