In the United States a small but increasingly vocal group of people believe that members of the country’s Muslim community are working from within to turn America into an Islamic state. This group of right wing thinkers believe this so-called ‘Soft Jihad’ is being carried out in schools, universities and other institutions across the country and they want to put a stop to it. In Assignment, Pascale Harter travels to America to find out how this fear is finding a foothold in public opinion there and hears from some of those accused of being the ’soft jihadists’.

Its hard to say whether this represents any meaningful majority of general American thought. In my personal experience, and in fact in the experience of almost every single muslim I know, incidents of Islamophobia are rare and isolated events. Yes there are assholes out there but do the jafis matter? Anecdotally, it seems the answer is a resounding no. The two weeks post 9-11 in fact were full of random strangers coming up to me and expressing their support and camraderies to me out of the blue - and I am talking full on redneck types and preachers and every sterotype of right wing america youd expect, not just liberal ones. And I was living in texas at the time.
Much like the actions of the violen extremists within Islam, the actions of the jafis get more press than their mainstream counterparts.

also, i just dont think that a BBC correspondent traveling to the USA is going to be able to find anything more than what they came looking for.
