I think the Wikipedia article does a good job of laying out te basic political stance of the Kharijites, noting how their two basic doctrines put them in opposition to both the Sunni and Shi’a (proto)camps.
I’m pretty much a reflexive hater of Kharijites by default, for obvious reasons, but despite my disdain I have to concede that there is osmething appealing about the zeal with which they pursued their pillars of principle, and further as a liberal I can see the appeal of those principles as well. The fact that they were in essence batshit insane does not, I think, invalidate teh principles out of hand.
