Samaha reviews A Jihad for Love, a movie about the muslim LGBT community.
It’s important to note that Western muslims have the luxury of actually having a LGBT community to speak of. Reconciling that identity with their Muslim one is of course a unique challenge for them.

Thank you for linking to the post Aziz.
I agree with your note and I think that the keyword here is luxury. The movie did portray Turkey as a secular Muslim country that had no laws banning homosexuality and this is where I think that Western Muslims who are part of the LGBT community can most relate. Whether or not a country has laws that are prohibitive of homosexuality or not does not really reflect how Muslim communities within these countries react to homosexuality.
Saturday evening I met a lovely American Muslim male that was telling me about the “excorcism” that he was facing here in the United States when he came out to his family and community. To hear him say – I don’t know if this is all worth it and that he wants to just give up his religion breaks my heart. It’s interesting that he just can’t do it though and he seems spiritualy attached.
Thanks again.

Just to clarify – the movie itself did not focus on persecutions but rather on the spirituality of these individuals – of course their ordeals were covered but it seemed that in both screenings that I attended their seemed to be a disappointment that the movie was not harsh towards Islam.
