    Possible ’streams’ within Islam:

    • traditionalist/classical - the need and importance of the ulama as guardians of the juristic and theological traditions
    • sufi - the need and importance of direct experience, usually mediated through the classical traditions
    • salafi - the importance of returning to the ’sources’ (Qur’an and hadith/sunna) and engaging in ‘reinterpretation’
    • liberal/islamist - the need to reconcile the edifice of Islam with the authority of the modern nation-state (the two, liberal/islamist, have different objectives)

i love how youve linked liberal and islamist. The methods are indeed the same. i also find that separating salafi frm islamist is useful, but it needs a bit more fleshing out.
