and I, still, stand by my comments and spoofs. Dang, now I have to esplain myself and it is never funny that. Never.

Consider this two ways, within the tent of Islam, and outside. Within the tent, yes, it is village Islam and I may be guilty of Middle Class sneering, but generally I am quite egalitarian in my mocking - i mock silly things regardless of race, class, creed or gender or religion. There are plenty of similair stories, and they are not confined to Islam.

Outside the tent of Islam, Non-muslims see all Muslims as one block. This is the same league as that BBC Story of a man in sudan marrying a goat. They are very popular on the BBC most read list, and we as Muslims are then lumped into a sign-obsessed, goat-marrying, hook-handed OTherness. The actual concept of Allah can no way be represented by arrangements of kumquat seeds or zebra stripes.

Told you esplanations are never funny.

Mr Moo I agree with you that believers of other religious traditions also take such phenomenon seriously. Google for “idols drinking milk” phenomenon which was extensively covered in Indian TV channels.
I also concede that these incidents further add to otherization (is that a real word? ) of muslims in the “West”.

I guess I accept the critique, since I am sometimes elitist. Though, I am also a strident believer in the essential rationality of all people - which is why I often lock horns with those on the left who talk about “sheeple” and “whats the matter with Kansas” etc. But the latter is an aggregate, when it comes down to individuals, I will confess to sometimes relapsing into standard intellectual conceit. Humility is always best.

That said, there is definite humor value in the whole signs-and-portents thing. As far as an expression of faith goes, there is an innocent wonder in how people see signs of Allah in all things — and that does come right out of the Qur’an. But literally?

Personally I feel on a theologic level that proof denies faith, and so I’ve no spiritual need to see literal Allah written into my kumquats. I dont sneer at the people who do, but neither do I think they are immune to a little teasing (in the aggregate), especially since its not malicious on my part, and I really do respect the judgement of the everyman as equal to my own (I do not believe in super-rationalism).

For theists like me, God does not need to sign His name on things He created. Creation itself speaks of His Glory. It’s just human to see organization in “randomness”.
