    speaking of emergent Islam:

    Momentum is building within the Muslim world to re-examine what had seemed immutable tenets of the faith, to challenge what had been taken as literal truths and to open wide the doors of interpretation (ijtihad) that some schools of Islam tried to close centuries ago.

    great must-read article, including more discussion of the Turkish project to re-evaluate the hadith corpus.

    Quite possibly the most balanced thing I’ve read on Islam in a major publication in the last 7 years, maybe ever. Fantastic.

    agreed, and to be honest I don’t think, in the year or two after 9-11, that I ever believed something like that would have ever been published in teh mainstream media (though we bloggers were all over it).

    but the article is full of falsehood, because the issue isn’t about ‘re-examining’

    the issue today is that the people who are doing the re-examining are complete butchers and assholes (like salafi freaks)
