This is a really important programme to watch. It can be watched it on Channel 4’s website if one has missed it. [Link]
There is an associated webpage and pamphlet

The classic scene is the journalist showing headlines that have appeared in newspapers here in the UK, with the words ‘Jew’ or ‘Black’ substituted for ‘Muslim’, and seeing the double standards.

    good god.

What the Sun had done was
to take a local story about a piece
    of vandalism, probably caused by
    local snobbery about the presence
of soldiers – and convert it into
    another kind of story altogether
about evil Muslims. This case is
far from unique. As we discovered
    while researching this pamphlet,
is in fact typical of reporting of
    the Muslim communities across
    large parts of the mainstream
    British media.

I had no idea it was so insidious. This happens here in the US but mostly only in the right wing media, which apart from the Washington Times, is far from mainstream. Even Fox News doesn’t dare go that far so brazenly.

there was a bit of controversy in the papers before this programme aired, when an excerpt from MP Shahid Malik (first Muslim minister in the government) said that Muslims were the “new Jews”. seeing his quote in context on the show, with its impassioned (non-Muslim) host bringing up a lot of disturbing parallels about what is acceptable in public discourse.

for the ‘mericans: the breadth of documentary programming available here in prime time is startling… some very bad, most very good. this was one of the best (on the anniversary of 7/7, no less)

typing on the train… sorry for the typos. btw, the online rebroadcasts are normally limited to those in the UK.
