Late-nite funny story: a couple of Sundays ago I woke up with a dry mouth, a headache and the propensity to stumble into walls and chairs and things. After a few minutes of complete bewilderment, it suddenly occurred to me: “Am I…hung over?” Upon further thought I realized that a dessert I had eaten at an upscale restaurant the night before probably had some kind of liqueur in it. (It was so sweet I wouldn’t have noticed.) The sad part is that I picked that dessert because it was one of the only ones that didn’t have alcohol listed in the ingredients.

Apparently upscale=booze in everything, even the stuff they don’t tell you about. Also apparently, after years of abstention I have become a total and complete lightweight.

    Ahhh…..tsk.tsk.tsk
    Haram, haram, haram…

    100 istaghferallah’s for you!

I wonder, when the Prophet said, there is good in it and bad in it: the bad outweighs the good…..

What was the “good” in it?

  • Nattuk 6:31 pm on June 28, 2008 | #

    Potential medical benefits (resveratrol, etc).

Do you know, Nattuk, or is that a possibility?
Source me if you know it to be true.

Well it reduces blood pressure (when taken in moderation), contains certain antioxidants, stabilizes mood etc…but the upshot is there are a zillion other ways to get the same benefits sans alcohol. Including, you know, plain old physical exercise.

I know there is good in alcohol. I know how to look up benefits of alcohol.

What I was asking is: What did the Holy Prophet see in it as a benefit? I wondered if there were any hadiths or stories about him carousing before he put the kibosh down on boozing.

Jesus apparently boozed it up (or so Willem Dafoe would have us believe) a little.

    Rasul?

Mashaallah, sister, your body reacts like a true muslim!
    :)

Verse 2.219. You could just say that Allah knows something beneficial (health-wise) is there, even if the Prophet (SAW) himself didn’t explicitly know.

“Jesus apparently boozed it up (or so Willem Dafoe would have us believe) a little.”

Water-to-wine story. The Last Supper. etc.

Hangover from a dessert? How much did you eat? ;-)

  • Willow 11:57 am on June 29, 2008 | #

:P It wasn’t huge. It was a (small!) slice of apple pie with some kind of caramel sauce. (I suspect the caramel sauce of containing the liqueur.) There couldn’t have been that much more alcohol in the thing than in cough syrup. I guess I’ve just gotten that used to going totally without.

Ayat 2:219 is the source of my question, certainly not the answer. No matter. The Qur’an remains a vast mystery. The Imam and the Mullah will tell you to cease asking such question, which is precisely why I ask them.

Anyhow, the main point is Willow’s and mine is just a tangent. I get a “buzz” sometimes when I drink NA beers, a salute to the past and a drink I still enjoy.

I know quite a few Muslims that party on New Years eve with fruit juices in mass quanities. There is probably a 3% alc content in fruit juice that has been stored for a few days.

Sort of cheating and also sort of reasonable. The holy Prophet wanted Muslims to enjoy life but not be irresponsible. It is difficult to get bloto drunk on juices.

Alc sensitivity is one of many benefits to the Muslim life.

Willow, ever got a buzz using Listerine? :)

  • Willow 4:40 pm on June 29, 2008 | #

Not that I’ve noticed, but now I’m off to find out…;)

To be fair I think I’m unusually sensitive to stuff like this. I used to get fruity off of Orangina back when they used to put guarana in it…
