    I think in one sense you can’t expect a reasonable self-criticism. Thats the benefit of having a genuine opposition. This is true in politics where you really need to have (honest, principled) Republicans around to curb the excesses of Democrats’ principled ideology, and vice versa. Any policy that can 1. make progress in solving a problem and 2. survive a challenge by the ideological opposition is one that is probably ribust enough to do the job with minimal unexpected consequences. With regards to human rights, the same logic holds - after all, one might argue that the Human Rights commissions of the UN are equally biased and hypocritical for being so painstaking about pointing out the shortcomings of muslim countries without regards to the problem in their own backyards. Better to let teh critiques mount from both sides, aimed at each other, and then take them together to get a real idea of the global problem, than to trust one or the other exclusively.

    really? can you give me a concrete example? i thought there was always a muslim nation represented on the commission.
