It’s unnerving that the planned expansion looks more appropriate for a Vegas resort – the ongoing decimation of historical Islamic sites and the lack of respect for traditional architecture in this heart of the Islamic world is a real problem – one tied to the fact that the Saudi nation acts unilaterally on heritage issues that are also the concern of the wider Islamic world.

u guys ever talked to a meccan native? it’s a pretty normal city with normal stuff going down; i talked to this guy raised in mecca once at a wine bar. pretty weird.

what bothers me far worse about this, is how much history has already been erased from Mecca, and how much more will be obliterated over time as these schemes proceed.

This really bothers me. There’s something soul-draining about even the thought of Starbucks anywhere near the Kaaba, let alone this new onslaught of visual cacophony that’s about to be unleashed.
