    Well, its a bit of a stretch, but I was thinking that the Hulk sees Betty in the same vein as a Sufi does God. Including the asymptotic approach that never quite reaches the Beloved.

    Would that make Batman a modernist, since he rejects the corrupt apparatus of traditional authority in favor of his own individual interpretation of social justice? (His zeal for which stems from unresolved childhood neuroses?)

    …all these guys leave a little to be desired re: modesty. i guess the hulk would fit the sufi since they’re the least likely to be constrained by praxy…though i read that is a debatable issue.

    I know you are trying to stick to heros, but if anyone is Salafist it is probably Darkseid who desires to eliminate all free will and emotion from the universe and reshape it into his own image by any means. If that’s not a salafi I don’t know what is

    Tariq, to be honest the idea of supervillians didnt occur to me, but now that you mention it, obviously Magneto is Osama bin Laden :)

    Batman as modernist… hmm, I like it. Who in the comic hero/villian pantheon fits the Progressive label?
