Sunny Hundal says ‘Christian fundamentalism’ has arrived in Britain. I am not so certain, but we shall see.

i don’t get sunny’s argument insofar as *christian fundamentalists have long existed* in the UK. they simply had retreated into their own subculture like american evangelicals in the 1930s. i know this because i used to read a lot about creationism, and there was a thriving british creationist movement, it was just focused toward its own community. there are more christian fundamentalists in the UK than muslims, no question about it. multiculturalists and the nationalist right pay less attention to them for their own disparate reasons.

“Opinionpanel Research’s survey of more than 1,000 students found a third of those who said they were Muslims and more than a quarter of those who said they were Christians supported creationism. Nearly a third of Christians and 10% of those with no particular religion favoured intelligent design. Women were more likely to choose spiritual explanations: less than half chose evolution, with 14% preferring creationism and 22% intelligent design.
