…reading a fair amount of material on hindutva. problem: bimodal distribution between those who support or oppose. most scholars have a hard time preventing their distaste for the ideology from seeping into the text. in any case, struck by similarities between Jamāl-al-dīn al-Afghānī and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. both were relatively liberal modernists who became intellectual ancestors for anti-modernist “fundamentalist” movements (salafiya and hindutva).

i almost became the attorney for a guy who was claiming he was persecuted by muslims in india because of his hindutva views. until the supervising attorney was like “yea, he might not like you very much. let me reassign that case.” that would have presented some interesting ethical issues.

jewish attorneys have represented neo-nazis (for ACLU). the hostility usually causes problems. hindutva is i think to a great extent more racial-national than religious, though these sorts of categories aren’t totally accurate no matter what….
