This doesn’t sit well with me.

Saraji Ummzaid has an extensive commentary on this story

I agree completely with her analysis. The refusal to do janazah mixes the criminalsup with Islam more than doing it would have. It seems a case of “doth protest too much” and thats how it will be seen in the eyes of the very people that the philly mosque is trying to appease.

Thats exactly what this refusal is. An appeasement.

I seem to be in the minority in supporting the Germantown Masjid’s decision to not host the funeral.

The City of Philadelphia is up in arms over the death of the police officer. It appears to be a mini-post 9/11 environment and I would liken a mosque hosting this guy’s funeral to a mosque in NYC holding a funeral for the 9/11 hijackers in the aftermath of the terror attacks.

Secondly, there is an appalling criminal subculture amongst the Muslims in Philadelphia and this refusal sends a strong message to the criminals: Clean up or we will not stand with you.

To the contrary to what Aziz said about “doth protest too much”, what I have seen is a reaction of “about time they stood up to the darker elements of their community”

I agree with Tariq. In a perfect world we could shrug this off in favor of benevolent respect for all dead, criminal or no, but this is not a perfect world…it’s one in which Islam is becoming nothing more meaningful than a way to express (often violent) dissatisfaction with the status quo. Certainly it wasn’t anything more meaningful for the guy who dressed up like an Arab *woman* and killed a police officer. This isn’t a gang. This is a religion. I don’t feel I’m obligated to share a sense of community with the people who treat it like a gang. Neither should the leadership of the masjid.

Since I am not in philly, i guess its easy for me to sit here and critique the mosque’s decision. so, consider me chastized.

still, while i fully understand the reaction (thanks to your analogy) that would have resulted had the mosque done the janaza, I don’t think refusing the janaza earns them any credit in distancing themselves from these acts. Still, not earning credit is better than an outright penalty.

I can accept the political necessity, but still, it doesn’t sit right.

It’s been years since anything having to do with the relationship between Americans and Islam has sat right with me.

uh, in philly they closed the biggest street — ben franklin boulevard — for the cop’s funeral. germantown mosque would be idiotic to do the funeral.

what doesn’t sit right is that a muslim killed a man.
