Salafism in the US had a very similar history with the relentless witch hunts and the widespread “salafi burnout”. It is not spoken about much, but a criminal sub-culture took root within this movement because the important thing was to be “salafi” (i.e., have the correct political position) and not on personal improvement.
In other words a non-salafi of good character was seen to be less that a salafi bank robber.
