One time I was in Istanbul, I met three students from a Central Asian state (forget which one now). They were in the country to complete degrees in ‘Turkish studies’. They were all Muslims (I met them in an obscurish mosque I was looking for), but they were far more interested in pan-Turkic politics and cultural affiliation.
